Volvo trim motor bad?

I have an 86 Bayliner Ciera Command Bridge with a 350 engine and Volvo outdrive. I'm not sure of the model number on the outdrive, I could look it up when I go back out to the marina though. Anyways, my problem is that the motor won't trim up. I'm pretty sure the problem is with the electric trim motor (the motor says volvo penta electrolux 850834).

First we disconnected the ground and power wires that go to the trim motor. With the trim up switch engaged we got a 12v reading off of the power line, which would seem to eliminate everything before the wires (switch, relays, etc.). Next we unbolted the motor and pulled it off. When we re-connected the power lines and hit the trim up switch again, it came right on and started spinning. Then we tried manually turning the gear that the motor is supposed to turn by using a wide flathead screwdriver. It turned by hand so it would seem that nothing is siezed there. After that we put the motor back on, tried the trim switch again, and just like before, nothing.

My question is does it seem possible that the motor is just worn out and no longer has enough power to turn the gear under a load, but will spin freely when it is unhooked from the gear? Our initial thought was that it's an electric motor so if it was bad it just wouldn't come on and if it comes on then it's not bad... but now I'm wondering what else could it be?

Before I go ahead and order a new motor, does anybody have any other suggestions?

Thanks

Re: Volvo trim motor bad?

You will need to come up with the engine model number and drive type for any help.
Not many people here know the parts by a part number or what system you have.

Did it work before, and just stop working? Do you have light that comes on when the tilt is up? Is that working?

Last I checked, they weren't giving those motors away so...

I wonder if an Auto/electric shop could test the motor? See what kind of amps its drawing.

I would also check all the wire connections. Remove all the gounds and clean them up. There is a ground wire on the lift assembly mounting bolt, no?

Good luck!!

Well, I was told that it worked before, and then just stopped. When we bought the boat, this was the only thing that didn't work, but based on what we paid for the boat, we were willing to overlook it.

Yes, there is a light on the trim switch, that is not on right now, and the drive is down. Is the light supposed to come on to let you know the drive is all the way up, or all the way down?

It's just strange to me that with the motor wired, but just not inserted into the gear that its supposed to turn, it comes on and spins, but as soon as you insert it into the gear- nothing.

I'm going back out there this weekend so I'll check the ground wires, etc. then, and also get the model numbers off of the outdrive.

Thanks for the help.

Boy that's the truth,

My 2003 is most likely a bit different yet my pump section was bad and Volvo wanted near $600 for the motor/pump combo. I was informed that the "assembly" was the only way to get the manifold. Luckily my VP authorized shop had a good used pump manifold ($50) on the shelf (from a boat/owner with a bad trim motor no less - who purchased the assembly).

The motor on the other hand can be purchased separately - aftermarket as well.

Best of luck

Re: Volvo trim motor bad?

Are there any updates on this subject? I am having the same problem and it is last resort to buy a new motor.

I have the four wire motor, can this setup be converted to the 2 wire motor?

Thanks

Pete
