I have an 86 Bayliner Ciera Command Bridge with a 350 engine and Volvo outdrive. I'm not sure of the model number on the outdrive, I could look it up when I go back out to the marina though. Anyways, my problem is that the motor won't trim up. I'm pretty sure the problem is with the electric trim motor (the motor says volvo penta electrolux 850834).
First we disconnected the ground and power wires that go to the trim motor. With the trim up switch engaged we got a 12v reading off of the power line, which would seem to eliminate everything before the wires (switch, relays, etc.). Next we unbolted the motor and pulled it off. When we re-connected the power lines and hit the trim up switch again, it came right on and started spinning. Then we tried manually turning the gear that the motor is supposed to turn by using a wide flathead screwdriver. It turned by hand so it would seem that nothing is siezed there. After that we put the motor back on, tried the trim switch again, and just like before, nothing.
My question is does it seem possible that the motor is just worn out and no longer has enough power to turn the gear under a load, but will spin freely when it is unhooked from the gear? Our initial thought was that it's an electric motor so if it was bad it just wouldn't come on and if it comes on then it's not bad... but now I'm wondering what else could it be?
Before I go ahead and order a new motor, does anybody have any other suggestions?
Thanks
