Volvo Tilt Problems

My volvo 5.8L lost it's Power Tilt all of the sudden. I was actually running the kicker motor only, not main volvo when I smelt a burning smell. I immediately shut down the small kicker and looked under the hood to find a puff of smoke coming up. After a lengthy trial and error investigation we realized that the Relay Switch attached to the tilt motor had blown completely, fried! The tilt motor is OK, I had it tested, but I had to order a new relay. PROBLEM...! the new relay failed to work. Still no power tilt. I tested the main power line coming into the relay unit and it is coming up dead, zero power coming through the hot wire completely. I guess my question is , where is this all leading? I've gotten marine mechanics opnions, but so far they are all over the place with no clear consensus on what caused the original failure, and now why I've got no power at all to the new relay? My worry is they are all going to start calling for complete new wire harnesses, or even worse, all new controls. How do I trust where this is going? I have only owned the boat for 2 weeks and the problems are obviously mounting. I know, don't go there, it's a used boat without warranty, but was dealer checked and certified as 100% aok. That's worth allot at this point!
Thanks for whatever opinions you folks might have.

Re: Volvo Tilt Problems

I've had wiring harnesses melt down due to shorts, relays stick and about every other thing possible. But the first thing one needs to know is the full Model number of your 5.8L Volvo.
Volvo used different trim systems on different years (models).
Check out this Volvo service bulletin.
