VOLVO THROTTLE SHIFTER ISSUE

Hello. I have a 2000 SSI 196 Chaparral with a Volvo Penta engine. All runs great except when I'm on the water I can shift from neutral to forward and then back to neutral and then reverse a few times. Then it locks in to throttle only mode without pushing the center button. I am then stuck in that mode as I push the button to release it but nothing happens. It takes the control of the boat away and very difficult to dock or load on trailer. What am I doing wrong or not doing that I should be doing. Please help.

To me, it sounds like your shifter needs to be serviced. Doesn't sound right as my 12 yrs of ownership of the Four Winns in my signature, never had that issue.
