Hey everyone; Have an '03 Volvo sx sterndrive. Checked the search feature but didn't find my answer to this question. My trim gauge and or trim switch is defective. Motor goes up and down, gauge does not respond. Was told to try replacing trim switch located on right side of the lower unit.Took the switch off but noticed the two wires going into the switch are intergrated right into it, no connectors or splices seems like the wires are continuance all the way up to the dash gauge.Do you cut and splice in order to repair? Is this switch when bought new have wires that you have to reroute all the way up to the dash gauge? Any help would help!! THANKS

Re: volvo sx trim switch

The switch has nothing to do with the gauge, besides, if the drive goes up and down with the switch then it's working.
If the gauge isn't working, it's most likely the gauge sender on the starboard side of the gimbal ring over the pivot pin.

If you choose to replace the sender ring on the starboard side of the lower unit, you have two choices: Drop lower unit and unplug old sending unit, then plug in new one and reset lower unit; OR cut the wires and splice, liberally coating the splice with black waterproof rubber-type gunk. I chose the latter three years ago and haven't looked back yet....

Good luck with solving your problem.

You can change the sender on the SX drives without cutting the wires or pulling the drive.

I am with DonS. would be to easy to purchase the correct manual, about the price of a new gauge, and trouble shoot it. all the sender is is a potentiometer and is esily tested with a digital multimeter. depending on access to the gauge the test should take less than 20 min. this will test power to the gauge. gauge ground and sender and wiring.

undo the wiring at the connector inside the hull. undo the clip that holds the wireing plug to the shield inside the hull and push it out. if you use an ohmeter between the terminals on the plug it should change resistance when you trim it up and down. if it does its ok.term a to c should read between o and 600 ohms, term a-b should read the same. term c-b should read 600 ohms all the time.term c on the hull side is the signal wire and term a on the hull side is ground.

That clip rodbolt mentioned is just above the water tube. Usually not too bad to access, a lot depends on how the boat was built.

Getting the wires back in the hole from the outside is usually easier if you pull a string through with the old wires.

Here is the testing and adjusting info from a Volvo manual.

trust me the service manual set you buy will be the only investment that pays off in a boating world
buy the set from volvo, they are not terribly pricy
