Volvo SX Shift/Trottle cables

I have a 2000 Wellcraft 22 WA w/ Volvo 5.0GL and SX-M outdrive. I took it to reputable boatyard to have the outdrive serviced because I had no record of when or if this had been done previously. They basically replaced everything; bellows, hoses, o-rings, seals, etc. as well the shift and trottle cables. When I picked the boat up I did not have time to do a proper sea trial so it was just a short run at slow speed back to the slip. But I did notice that the trottle behaved a lot differently than what I was used to. I now have to move the control lever 2-3 inches after engaging in gear (forward or reverse) before I get any reaction from the trottle. Before the cables were replaced there was immediate reaction from the trottle after engaging.
When I called the boatyard to ask about this they said that was the way it was supposed to be and that the old cables were stretched out which is why the trottle used to react immediately. They also said that there was only one possible way to install the cables and there are no adjustments that can be made so it MUST be right. Then I went back and looked at the work order and noticed that the technician had noted that he had modify the trottle cable to get it to fit. Does this sound right to you knowledgable folks? I don't know whether to just try to adjust to it the way it is, but it's a lot more to difficult to manuver in tight spaces. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

No it's not normal, and it's not normal to have to modify a cable to fit the box either

Can you post a picture of the back of the control lever where the cable atatches?

Can you also post a picture of what your control looks like and what the part number of the cable they put in?

Thanks for the reply Don and Bruce. The invoice lists two cables: 3851054
20' cable $42.23 and 3851052 18' cable $39.66. I will post photos as soon as I can get back to the boat - probably this weekend. Thanks again

Those are the top of the line "Extreme" cables. Good cables, but I'm not sure if they can be used on the older controls. If they can't, then they should have used the standard cables.
I've never tried the new cables on the Volvo drive, so can't say for sure.

These cables have the 33C ends on them. These are the exact ones that I just put on my Volvo. I did however put on a new control at the same time which accepted those style cables.

My older control may have been able to use that style with mods but I am not sure. That is why I want you to post pics of your control. The older control which I had from 1998 used the older style control which had the 33c ends on one side an the OMC style on the other.

I think those cables are the standard Telefex cables. There are two levels higher..the Supreme and the Extreme which is the highest. I did a lot of research on these cables before I bought mine.

I will post a picture of the control box and try to get one of the cable ends and attachments - is it pretty easy to take the cover off of the remote control?
