Hi,

As I inspected my outdrive after removing it for the first time, no maintenace records from PO, I noted that there is a ring of rust around the shifter mechanism. Is this something that I should be concerned about?

My guess is the seal was installed backwards. There is a steel ring in the seal, and it should be on the inside.
I would get a new seal installed in it ASAP.
Is water getting into the drive?

Re: Volvo SX: Rust on shift mechanism

I don't think so. The gear oil in the oil was clear when I checked it some weeks ago. I will check again.

From the Volvo manuals, the seal is a double sided seal with a tension spring on either side, both are open to their respective side. Seemed odd to be to allow the spring to be open to the water. The manual talks about greasing this, but that doesn't seem like much a long term solution.

Thanks,

johnbo

I wasn't referring to the springs, but the steel ring in the seal.

Re: Volvo SX: Rust on shift mechanism

That's a slightly different (and better) picture than what I see in my 'NC' V/P manual. Mine does not show or mention the steel ring, only that the larger gap/space should be on the outside.

I did a closer inspection and using your picture as a guide, I looked (from the outside) for the steel ring. Gently probing that area shows no steel portions. I can, with a little imagination, detect the springs, but not the ring.

I'm starting to think that the final step in your picture about coating the outside surface with gasket sealing compound was not done. This step was not mentioned in my manual. This step would obviously help protect that spring that is exposed to the world.

What version of the manual are you referencing? Mine has a 1996/4 printing date.

I still need to double check for the presence of water in the gear lube, I'm a bit hampered in that my stand is so low that I can't get a catch pan under it. (The boat sits very low on the trailer)

Thanks,

johnbo

It doesn't really matter why it's rusted at this point, the seal needs replaced. Just make sure the new one is installed properly.
There are instructions with the new seal.

Before I order the seal, will I need to re-shim the shift stop screw? Just need to know if I need to order the shim washers.

Thanks,

johnbo

Nope, no reason to remove that screw.
