Volvo SX Outdrive Newbie Question

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I've never dealt with Volvo outdrives before. I'm in the process of buying a boat with a Volvo SX outdrive and I was looking around and noticed a hole under the outdrive. You can only see this if the drive is tilted all the way up.

First of all, does anybody know what this hole is? Is it exhaust outlet, or does it need some type of a cap on it?

Thanks in advance.

I think there should be two bellows. If there is only one, then that would probably be the exhaust.

From what i can tell from the pic yes thats where the exhaust bellows should be...Ask the seller why it does not have it and when was the drive last pulled and serviced.
Ask for proof of that too...

The drive should be removed and serviced every year and the bellows replaced every 3 or 4 years depending on condition.

Re: Volvo SX Outdrive Newbie Question

Some of the SX drives do not have an exhaust bellows, these have a short piece of tubing that directs the exhaust into the outdrive while the outdrive is trimmed in. As the drive is trimed out the exhaust is allowed to exit without going thru the drive.

Really hard to give any usable info with out knowing engine model number to determine year and what engine you have. But there was always something (tube or bellows) attached to the transom shield. And by your pictures. there is nothing.

Don't panic however,

My 87 Four Winns 211 Liberator with King Cobra went about 15 years without an exhaust bellows.

The boat came with thru-hull exhaust and my brother (who bought the boat new) after about 3 years or so decided that he wanted an occasionally quieter ride so had a y-pipe and Capts Call installed.

When I got the boat in 2005, I asked my brother what happened to the exhaust bellows and he said "what's an exhaust bellows?"

Turns out the installer didn't bother installing an exhaust bellows!

Didn't hurt a thing!

I fixed it a different way though:rolleyes:

Cheers,

Re: Volvo SX Outdrive Newbie Question

Thanks for your advice guys. I'm going to bring the boat down to a Volvo authorized service center and have them take a look at it. Thanks again!
