Volvo SX mount to 1989 Cobra Transom assy?

Does anyone know if a volvo SX drive can mate to a 1989 OMC transom assy? I have read where it is compatible and that the volvo drives after 92 had a superior cone shifting mechanism. If so, any ideas what year/model for volvo to fit the OMC (1989 5.7L). Thanks in advance.

Yes it can be done, and Volvo has kits available to make the changeover for most engines.
Some of the things needed, other than the drive are: Engine mounted raw water pump, transom shield pivot housing, trim cylinder spacers, and a new shift cable.
