VP 4.3GL PEFS SX-M drive 2001.

Unfortunately bow on to the beach, my outdrive touched the bottom. I tried to raise the drive but it was stalled by the bottom. The 10Amp fuse blew and I replaced it but although the seloniods click when you try to move the drive up / down there is no noise from the motor. The boat is 200 miles away so I am reading the manual and trying to get a plan of action ready for next weekend.

Is this a sensible approach or am I missing something out like another fuse.

1) Put a meter on the connections to the motor and move the switch. If I get 12V then the motor needs replacing.
2) No voltage, then replace seloniods. Question if the selonids click does this not tell me they are OK or can they click but still be faulty.

Is there somewhere else I should be looking there does not appear to be any damage to the drive / rams etc.

Regards

Chris

Re: Volvo SX-M 2001 power tilt and trim question

that system works by revereing the polarity on the green and blue motor leads, up the blue wire is positive and the green is negative. for down the green is positive and the blue is negative.
the reversing is done in the relays.
yes a relay can click and be bad.
follow the exact steps in the manual for testing and dont create your own unless your familiar with 12V DC circuits and motors.

Which manual do you have Chris? You have a 2000, EF model engine, the manual you need is the Electrical, Ignition, Fuel book. Then go to page 4-4&5 and it details exactly how to test the relays.
Did you check the main 50A breaker on the electrical box on the Stbd exhaust manifold? If it's popped, it could cause your problem.
If the boat is wired properly, the relays wouldn't click if it were popped, but I have seen some boat manufacturers wire the trim switch with power from the helm. Not sure why they did, but they did.
Checking the motor by directly wiring to a battery as rodbolt mentioned is the quickest and easiest way to check just the motor.
It's also a quick way to get the drive up or down if the relays or trim switch goes bad.

Re: Volvo SX-M 2001 power tilt and trim question

Thank you both very much for the information. Don, I was looking in the Sterndrive Manual,. I have the electrical manual but 0unfortunately its in the boat but I will read the section before starting. I didnt check the 50A fuse but will do. And as you both say, I will test the motor with a direct feed from the battery first. Obvious now you guys pointed it out.

Thanks again I am sure I will be up and running soon

Perhaps this will help, it's a copy and paste from the Electrical manual.

Trim/Tilt System Troubleshooting
Before beginning this procedure:
• Charge battery and connect battery cables.
• Turn key switch OFF, and remove key.
All tests are made from the RELAY SIDE of the trim/tilt relay sockets.
1. Connect voltmeter black lead to a clean engine ground.
2. Check for voltage at both sides of the 50 amp trim/tilt circuit breaker.
• If no voltage at trim/tilt side of the 50 amp circuit breaker, check for a tripped breaker. If okay check
battery and wiring.
• If voltage at trim/tilt side of 50 amp circuit breaker, go to Step 3 (or Step 11, if problem is only with tilt
down/trim in).
UP CIRCUIT
1 2 3. Mark UP and DOWN relays, and remove relays from relay sockets.
4. Connect voltmeter red lead to V1 and black lead to V2.
• If no voltage at V1, check red/purple wire between trim/tilt side of 50 amp circuit breaker and relay
sockets. If red/purple wire is okay, check black wire between relay sockets and engine ground.
• If voltage at V1, go to Step 5.
5. Connect voltmeter black lead to a clean engine ground, and voltmeter red lead to V3 (blue).
6. Push UP trim button.
• If no voltage at V3, check trim switch and wiring, and go to Step 7.
• If voltage at V3, go to Step 7.
7. Reinstall UP relay. Push blades only halfway into UP socket.
8. Push UP trim button and check for voltage at V4 on relay blade (M terminal of relay).
• If no voltage at V4, go to Relay Ohmmeter Test.
• If voltage at V4, go to Step 9.
9. Disconnect trim motor’s blue/white and green/white power wire connector (leave relay in socket).
10. Push UP trim button. Check for voltage on blue/white wire.
• If no voltage on blue/white wire, check blue/white wire from relay bracket to motor connector.
• If voltage on blue/white wire, check motor and lead.
DOWN CIRCUIT
1 2 11. Mark UP and DOWN relays, and remove relays from relay sockets.
12. Connect voltmeter red lead to V5 and black lead to V6.
• If no voltage at V5, check red/purple wire between trim/tilt side of 50 amp circuit breaker and relay
sockets. If red/purple wire is okay, check black wire between relay sockets and engine ground.
• If voltage at V5, go to Step 13.
13. Connect voltmeter black lead to a clean engine ground, and voltmeter red lead to V7 (green).
14. Push DOWN trim button.
• If no voltage at V7, check trim switch and wiring, and go to Step 15.
• If voltage at V7, go to Step 15.
15. Reinstall DOWN relay. Push blades only halfway into DOWN socket.
16. Push DOWN trim button and check for voltage at V8 on relay blade (M terminal of relay).
• If no voltage at V8, go to Relay Ohmmeter Test.
• If voltage at V8, go to Step 17.
17. Disconnect trim motor’s blue/white and green/white power wire connector (leave relay in socket).
18. Push DOWN trim button. Check for voltage on green/white wire.
• If no voltage, check green/white wire from relay socket to motor connector.
• If voltage on green/white wire, check motor and lead.

Re: Volvo SX-M 2001 power tilt and trim question

Don, Rodbolt , thank you for your help. It turned out to be the motor that was not working. I removed the motor and lightly sanded the armature and the brushes (Armature was quite dirty). Reassembled and it works. Spent a day on the water but it blew the 10amp fuse again. So basically I am buying a new motor. My only concern is that if it was being forced to draw more current because of a fault in the pump bit of the unit. I ruled this out because I could turn it easily with a screwdriver. But its still a nagging doubt.

Thanks again, Chris

That doesn't makes sense, that 10A fuse doesn't control the motor. Only the relays, the 50A breaker is what puts power to the motor.
I've seen the relays blow that fuse or maybe a short in the wiring, but the motor is not causing it.

Re: Volvo SX-M 2001 power tilt and trim question

Thanks Don, I agree it doesnt make any sense to me.

Running through what happened.

1) Motor stopped working. Initial investigation showed 10amp fuse had blown.
2) Replaced fuse, relays clicked but no movement from motor or sound.
3) Tested motor, 12.89 volts getting to motor from relays.
4) Removed motor, direct connection from battery to motor and the motor did not move.
5) Took motor apart and checked I have voltage to the brushes. Armature dirty and brushes looked a bit pitted.
6) Sanded armature and brushes reassembled motor and it worked with direct connection.
7) Put motor back , trim worked fine all day until .... wait for it ... I got a rope (my ski rope) caught round the prop. Tried to raised the drive and nothing.
8) Checked 10amp fuse and it had blown. The 50amp fuse has never blown.

My thought at the moment is

a) The motor was bad or it would have run with a direct connection hence the $500 I have just spent hasnt been wasted ( Please just let me thinnk that ;) )

b) There is a problem with the relays that means they draw more current than 10amp necessary in a situation where the drive is stalled. But work fine when the drive is able to move.

What are your thoughts? Unfortunately this is expensive learning but I am enjoying myself and feel what I learn will help me in future.

Many thanks

Chris

Is your trim switch on the shift/throttle control? If so, you may have a short in the wiring where they go into the box or up into the shifter arm itself.

Re: Volvo SX-M 2001 power tilt and trim question

Don,

Thanks,

I have two one on the throttle and one on the stern. Now that you mentioned it, it blew when I used the stern switch as opposed to the one on the throttle that I used all day. I will checkout the switch. I had had a problem with it sticking on a year or so ago and rarely use it ....

.... You may have cracked it.

Thanks again. I am not at the boat for two weeks but will update the tread with the results, thanks again

Chris
