Hi all. I took quite a bad ding today on metal slipway bollard which has taken out my prop.

Checking the propshaft with a dial indicator reveals a 20 Thou runout. Scanning the board seems to indicate that anything more than 5 Thou is problematic - can anyone confirm that ?

So ... the question is has anyone here attempted a prop shaft replacement ?

Specifically :

1) Can it be done at all without a shop full of Volvo Special tools ?

2) Can it be done without pulling the L/U from the drive ? i.e. by removing the bearing behind the prop thrust washer ?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Not only does it take special tools, It's also impossible to do it without the proper service manual so you know how to do the job in order to get the gear patterns, back lash, and bearing preloads done in the proper order.

Re: Volvo SX L/U Prop Shaft

Hi Don S,

Thanks for the reply. I DO have the original Volvo Penta shop manual as well as the Clymer.

Most of the discussion is around getting the pinion / crownwheel set up correctly. I'm wondering if it's possible to remove the propshaft with the L/U still attached by removing the bearing carrier and simply withdrawing the propshaft.

What's not clear if whether removing the propshaft that way would cause the pinion and crownwheel to fall apart inside the assembly meaning that I'd have to disassemble the whole thing anyway.

Anyone got any opionions on wether 20Thou run out is WAAAAY to much or just acceptable for the rest of this season ?

it needs to be replaced, unless you want to run water, instead of gear oil. the season just started. hurry up and and have it done. it all must come aprt in a certain order and go back exactly as don has said. .020 is wayyy much. you should be able to see that wobble! i will chew the hell out of your prop shaft seal.
