Guys, i just had my sx-m drive gone over and all new bearings after some rust from salt water intrusion... so I assume it is good... but decided to change uvs as the gimbal went last trip out last year and figured it was time to do them as well.

the guy said he couldn't get uv's to replace but only the whole shaft so he matched uv's that needed a small spacer on each side for exact fit.. either way I am now getting a small knocking noise except when full lowered and straight ahead... sounds like when the gimbal went last year... is it the uv's (not right ones) can you buy the correct ones without shaft?

anybody have part numbers and where to buy? the guy tells me that he has done the spacer thing in past with no problems

thanks for the help in advance

Replaced my gimble brg. and u-joints last year, I definately had bad gimble becuase of noised and u-joints just had tight spots.. I have the exact same noises and my parts were oem and fit just right. In other words I have no clue. Put many ours on since and don't seem to have any problems.??
Hope we find out that it is normal.
jason.

Re: Volvo SX knocking noise.. just replaced uv's

I used omc parts which are actually the same as mercruiser, I found that out becuase my dad had an extra set from when he had a merc. I have noises mostly at idle or just off idle.
He should not have had to add any spacers. The u-joints are available at Napa part#18-2174. Oem #is 3860842. If I had to guess I would say it is those uv's. Hope this helps.

Re: Volvo SX knocking noise.. just replaced uv's

New here and just picked up a 03 FW with the volvo 4.3 GL-B/C and was researching on the forums about the gimball as another forum member recommended changing the gimball and came across this thread.

Is this a DIY project? If yes, does anyone have a write up on it?

I would rather go ahead and replace since I do not know the life of the existing (or if it was replaced).

Thanks

Re: Volvo SX knocking noise.. just replaced uv's

OMC had a service bulletin out regarding matched sets of u-joint parts. Says when replacing u-joints to mark the yokes for proper reinstallation as they are a balanced set from the factory. Thats why only available as an assembley from the factory (at least if still available).

I would also check your drive alignment. Saggy mounts and stringers in the boat can cause the engine to settle unevenly over time.

Another resource I found is www.marinemechanic.com. He has the info on the OMC service bulletin listed.
Good luck.

Re: Volvo SX knocking noise.. just replaced uv's

I thought I had marked the yokes.. but had the mechanic put it al lback together.. you think that would cause knocking at low rpm.. say like 600 when just idling?? Maybe i will have to take it apart again.

on another note I was told that the omc/merc u joints that you can order online are not the same as the volvo sx ones... this has caused me great confusion as the part numbers online match ones being sold but dealer swears that you can't use omc/merc ones in a sx drive... then the part numbers online at volvo say that the u joints have clips inside and mine has clips outside like on the ones listed for daul prop drives...

You would not think it would be that hard to match u joints... JBLAZE ..You may have same problem as me.. wrong u joints maybe

Re: Volvo SX knocking noise.. just replaced uv's

Ok.. I found this listing after doing various searches.. I think dealers mix up the fact that 1999 and some earlier drives were called omc sx drives... I talked to volvo and they are backordered on replacement shaft assemblies so even that option is now out.

on ebasic power they have listed several joints and some that say volvo sx but if you read carefully the only one that fits sx-m drives as well as the dp drives is this one and it is expensive.. never seen a u joint that expensive part number BPI94-94100... next question I guess is does anybody know a cross reference number for this part maybe others are cheaper.. even though I am just glad to have found this one.. JBLAZE you have the wrong joints just like me!! and same dam noise

I have an "LK" series Duo Prop and I have replaced my U-joints. I did them a long time ago and did not note the part number. I still have some noise from my u-joints in tight turns. If I ever do them again, I may just replace the whole shaft assembly.
