Re: Volvo SX Exhaust and Water paths
Thanks, that makes me feel a lot better! The boat has 166 hours, not sure what things could go wrong in that time...
I purchased the boat from ebay a couple of weeks ago and thought it would take me all winter to get it up and going. Because of unsecure snaps boat sat with water in it for a few months.. One of the reasons the previous owner was selling was that after he brought it in the dealer went to make sure everything was okay after discovering that winter was not good to the boat. As I mentioned the cover had come undone and it was a heavy snowfall year. Each time it snowed and melted it drained into the boat.
When the previous owner went to pick it up from storage it had about 12 inches of water in it. After draining the water an starting their troubleshooting process they replaced the starter because the water had gotten to it. Their are only two bolts that hold it on to the motor from underneath and the mechanic managed to break the bigger of the two. The dealer quoted the previous owner for 5 hours of labor to remove the engine and repair the bolt. They also had a laundry list of things to do, one of them was a trim pump and they quoted 750.00 for the pump and install.
that's the point that the owner decided it was going to cost too much to fix and offered it up on ebay. I talked to the seller and he told me the story and I figured I could pull the motor and fix the bolt and other items. I also thought I would need to replace the seats and carpet.I was the high bidder with a bid just over 2K.
The first thing I needed to do was clean it out. everything was covered with mildew and the items under the seat were still wet and smelly. With a few hours of power washing and scrubbing I manged to save the carpet and the seats.
I went to Sears and got one of those screw extractor kits, and with the help of my fianc?' started the process of trying to use it. The broken bolt was on the bottom on the engine so I had a hard time getting to it. After about an hour of trying to hold the mirror and drill with one arm wrapped in from under the front of the motor I managed to get enough for the extractor to hold onto. A few minutes later the remnants of the 5 inch bolt were in my hand and none in the engine block. I felt like drilling a hole and wearing it around my neck!
I think in their haste the repair shop had taken the lower unit off inspect. That came inside the boat and I was able to bolt it on last weekend. I had never done this before but found some shop service pages on how to do it.
to bolt the lower unit back on. It was at this point that I could finally hook up some water and do more than just turn the engine over and verify it was not froze up. I had taken the tank out and drained the gas and cleaned it. so once I put the water on and gas it I turned it over. It kinda started and sputtered then died. I tried different things and even starting fluid, still nothing. So last night i took out the plugs and just let it sit to "air out"
I was able to get new plugs from napa today. I had checked Autozone and checker and they didn't have anything... not even a clue about what I needed. I provided the same info to napa (spark plug number and sierra # and they had them in stock. anyway.. once I put in the new plugs it fired right up and purred like a cat. I'm hoping to get it out on the water once before winter sets in. So instead of replacing seats, and pulling motors. I will be upgrading electronics and doing touch up's. I even contacted a Ebay seller and he recreated some new decals for me based off a picture.
here's his store so you can see his work.

I'll put pictures up.. once I figure out how...
