Volvo SX drive will not come off

Hi,

I have a 1999 fourwinns with V8 305 5.0GL (2bbl) with a volvo penta sx outdrive. My problem is I cannot remove the outdrive.....I removed the six nuts, both rams, shifter cable both barrel and retaining clip. The outdrive seems to be corroded to the intermediate housing??? I have used WD-40, penetrating oil, a rubber mallet, a come-a-long to pull straight back from transom. Nothing is working.
I want to replace u-joints,boots and gimble bearing and it will not release for some reason.
I also just pulled my engine because the internal spline in the coupling attached to the flywheel are stripped out (female alum. spline) due to engine misalignment I am told. The male spline and gimble look good from what I can see (since the engine is out)
So the new coupler is on the engine now and is hanging in the air ready to go back in. Any suggestions to remove the outdrive??

Thanks

Re: Volvo SX drive will not come off

2 possibilities come to mind.
First is corrosion around the 6 studs where you removed the 6 mounting nuts. I've seen this happen on several that were used in salt water, and the drive was not removed for several years. Penatrating oil, like Aero Kroil not WD40 may help, along with an Oxy/Act torch to heat the housing aroundt the studs.
Second is water in the bellows that causes the input shaft to freeze into the gimbal bearing. Since the engine is out, you may be able to knock shaft out.
You will need to replace the bearings on the input shaft after than, along with the seal, since it will be taken out by the rust anyway.

Re: Volvo SX drive will not come off

Thank you for your response Don.
The boat has only been in fresh water (Michigan) but I believe you are correct as to why the drive will not come off. With the motor out I was able to hit the spline shaft hoping to loosen the bearing and/or shaft.
I still had no movement of the outdrive. I am getting sick over the whole thing....I have to make a choice continue to tear down more or.....can the dealer even remove it??

Thanks John

can the dealer even remove it??

Sure they can, the also know where to pry, where to heat, and know how the things go together and what can and can't be done. That is if they are an actual VP certified dealer, and not just advertising that they know VP.

Re: Volvo SX drive will not come off

I dropped the boat off yesterday a local marine mechanic without the engine to remove the outdrive....he said he has seen some bad boats that had been in salt water. I am the second owner and mine does not look like it has been in salt. We will see....

Thanks again,
John

Re: Volvo SX drive will not come off

Well The Marine service removed my outdrive. The reason it would not come off was the upper bearing carrier was corroded/fused to the Intermediate pivot housing. So now the four tangs on the bearing carrier snapped off and the pivot housing is cracked by them pulling them apart. I need a new pivot housing and bearing carrier by the look of it. The shaft and gimble were fine...
Any one know a place to buy a used or new pivot housing for cheap?
Thanks

Now you know what happens with "Lack of maintenance"
Ebay and craigslist are your best bet for cheap parts.
Might even check with your local Volvo dealer, he may have something. I know we always kept a lot of good parts from units that had complete replaments.
