Volvo 5.0 FL and a Volvo SX-C I/O -95 on a Glastron 195. Has only 80 hours. Bad noise when running caused me to take the upper and lower house down.
The large tapered roller bearing on the input drive shaft had a badly damaged roller cage and metal flakes everywhere. I'll replace it ofcourse. I also found a blue toning on the roller cage on the large tapered roller bearing on the vertical drive shaft in the lower gearcase. No scratches of sign of wear on the rollers or the bearing ring.
I fond no water in the oil. The oil level was a bit low.
- What could have caused this?
- Does the upper house get oil even if ideling or running at idel speed.
- How critical is the oil level?
- Do I need to replace the "blue bearing"
- Do I need to replace all o-rings and gaskets?
- Any other critical parts to replace, I'd like to keep the cost down.

Any advice other from someone who has seen this problem is greatly appreciated.

Glastron Swede

Re: Volvo SX bearing problems

what ever metal came off the bearing has gone everywear that the oil goes

it is not likely that any bearing in the drive would be safe to use again if they got BLUE it means they were VERY VERY HOT

i dont no what your gears look like but i would think that they have been damaged only a real expert looking at them can make the call if they can be reused

your problem sounds like it was caused by low oil it is nessary for the drive to be compleatly full

the only way to stop it is to check the oil level on a regular basis and change it once a year

i dont want to sound negitive but the drive sounds very badly damaged

tommays

Re: Volvo SX bearing problems

Thanks tommays,

Sure there was debris particularly in the upper house. The filter kept all the bigger flakes from the lower house.

The gears look fine and just about everything else but the damaged input shaft bearing and a small blue tone on one other bearing.

I respect what you say but changing a bearing is not only expensive but it entails a lot of extra work as well. It is hard to find a SX expert here and although I have a clymer that describes the process I have never done such a critical setting. Chanses are I spend a lot of money and make it worse.
Just replacing the damaged bearing and keeping a frequent track on noise and oil quality seems a safer option considering the boat only runs 20h per year and I have time to inspect it during winters.

Please tell me if you think I'm naive or if anyone else has a view.

well i guess the least you can do is change any blue bearings and shafts as long as you understand that at this point your gear housings are still good and a failed gear or bearing could damage the gear cases and make repiars Impossible

tommays

Sorry,
I Do........

It Appears that you have a Salvageable Outdrive, Right Now........

I'm Quite Sure,
That If you follow the path you speak of,
You'll be Buying a Complete Outdrive,
Probably Next Year...........

Re: Volvo SX bearing problems

hello
how big are the flakes? there is only so much clearence between the pinion and the fwd gear in the lower. if metal goes between the teeth the teeth normally lose.
the SX is an easy drive to tear down, reseal and reassemble. at least pull the carrier and carefully flush the case.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Volvo SX bearing problems

Guys,

I really value the discussion. I will investigate the cost to replace at least all bearings. The gears can be examined by an expert I guess. There is absolutely no mark on any teeth. They have that nice little polish where it is supposed to be and no marks. Of course I'm dismantling everything and cleaning/inspecting but I'd like to avoid the shimming procedure. It looks awfully complicated.
I've got a reason to go to US soon. Any idea of where I get best price on parts. If cheaper than over here I'll bring them over.

Thanks again you all.

hello
if you replace the bearings you must at least recck all the shim clearences. most the time it wont change cause bearings are finnished on a grinder but sometimes one will.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Volvo SX bearing problems

Like Rodbolt said, but follow the manual exactly as you also have to set rolling torque (preload) on the bearings. That is very important for proper bearing life and operation.
