Volvo SX 5.0 Drive issue

I bought this boat a couple years ago. Its a Four Winns, Hor.180 with the 5.0 liter in it. My question is, when shifting into gear it's really kind of banging into gear. My understanding was that these Volvo's have an idle cut out switch that allows it to shift into gear rather smoothly. Is there an adjustment for this issue? I only have a regular service manual, not shop. I'm thinking it's time to get the real books. Let me know what you think?

.

Those shift interrupt systems have NEVER been used by Volvo, only Merc and OMC with the dog clutch style drives. High idle rpm will make even a Volvo drive bang into gear. Especially if you happen to have SS props and running out of the water.

Like bondo mentioned, Full model number or even a SN is need for further information. Not even sure at this point if you have a Ford or Chevy 5.0L engine.

Re: Volvo SX 5.0 Drive issue

That would make more since then, I think I just got it confused with the others out there that do have the cutouts. This is a 2000 5.0GL/220PSHP 50GLPEFS Drive is a 1.66:1 SX Ser# Engine 4110195577 and drive is 4112083519. As far as Idle settings go I think anything has ever be messed with as far as factory settings. I'll have to check it next time out, I really haven't gotten a lot of use out of it. But I guess the clunking into gear is probably normal for these things, but it sure seems excessive? The joints are fine in it as well?

No, it isn't common. You have a problem.
Find out what that idle rpm is.

I haven't fired it up this year yet, I guess I can go hook it up and run it. I'll be back.

Ok, I have 4 little dashes prior to the 1 on the Tach. It's in between the 3rd and 4th. so I guess that would be 800- 850rpm?

Find a shop tach. The boat tachs are never accurate.
You should be between 550 and 650 rpm (in gear, in the water) at idle.
Rough guess is around 700 rpm in neutral on muffs.

Re: Volvo SX 5.0 Drive issue

Is there something that can be adjusted to fix this issue? Or, am I looking at some work? The guy I got the boat from took care of it, in his own way I guess. He had a shop do everything "therapist". So I've had a few small issues I had to fix on it, but nothing major. New boot, Trim sender, oil pressure sender, and some misc. little stuff. Hours are still pretty low, for it's age. I racked my back up pretty bad a few years ago and haven't taken it out much, I'd still rather fix this myself instead of paying someone else to do it. Nothing personal against shops or the guys who work in them " been there, done that", but I'm getting real tired of paying people to do their job, and later figuring out that they jacked it up worse then it was in the first place.

Knowbody here knows what your issue is, let alone if it's adjustable.
This is a forum, everyone here (inclucing me) can only read your thread. We can not hear it, feel it, see it or anything else.
Trust me, a good mechanic uses all those skills when troubleshooting, not just reading a couple thoughts.

I just figured that if there was something in the service manual about this, then maybe there would be an easy adjustment or something to fix it. I guess I'll just have to take it in then. Bummer

Re: Volvo SX 5.0 Drive issue

How can figure out if this thing is GM or Ford? Four Winns didn't specify when I got all my boat info from them? I've been asked from parts places but I have no idea?

Re: Volvo SX 5.0 Drive issue

Your engine should be a Chevy. Ford 5.0's have the distributer in the front (towards the bow) Chevy 5.0's have it towards the back (transom).

The above statement above tells it all.
Have a look at this Volvo service bulletin. It explains all of the model number and what it tells all that know anything about Volvo's
