Re: Volvo Starting Problems

Cortez, I am no expert but to try and start the ball rolling. Compression tests seem fine.

This is straight from the manual - Engine will start when primed - will not continue to run.

1) Check Fuel Supply (How old / new is fuel?)
2) Check idle mixture and idle speed (See below)
3) Check fuel lines for blockage / air leaks
4) Check for plugged fuel filters ( I change min annually).
5) Check fuel pump for correct pressure / vacuum.
6) Remove carb, check float level , inlet valve operation , check for dirt, water etc etc.

Have you tried setting the idle Mixture and Idle speed. Turn the idle mixture screms inward until they are lightly seated (DO NOT TURN TIGHT). Turn out 3/4 to 1 turn. Get the engine running and up to temperature. Turn the idle screws inward until engine rpm begins to drop due to lean mixture. Back screws out evenly until best idle RPM is reached. Readjust idle speed as necessary to

I brought the three Volvo Penta manuals that cover your engine as well, yes they were expensive but I have found them invaluable.

Hope all is fixed soon

Chris

The problem i am having is when starting.I pump throttle 2/3 times and turn key the engine starts right away for 2/3 seconds then dies
After you pump the throttle, do you advance the throttle up a bit to keep the rpm's up around 1500 till the engine smooths out? You should,it sounds like it's just being choked too much when cold and not enough rpm to keep going. Unlike old carbed cars, there is no hi idle with the choke on.

As far as manuals go, there is only 1 service manual for your engine that I am aware of. It's Volvo PN 7732736.
The only other manual you would need would be the service manual for the drive. Your drive, if no one has changed it, is a DP-C drive. There is a tag on the upper gear box just below where the bellows attaches that has the number on it.
The service manual for your drive is PN 7731627.

If you would like an owners/operators manual, you can download from from the Volvo site at the link below.
http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/global/en-gb/marineengines/operators_manual/

Your compression test should be done with the throttle open, probably won't change much. Here is a link to the Mercruiser service bulletin that explains how to do the compression test. It's almost word for word with the Volvo bulletin. It came from GM, so it works for either.

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Bullet/97/97_25.pdf

Re: Volvo Starting Problems

Sorry Don if I confused.

1) Manual Engine Mechanical "EF" Models
2) Electrical , Ignition , Fuel, "EF" Models
3) Sterndrive manual.

Cortez.

If you want cheap VP parts and good advice in the UK try www.volspec.co.uk They give good mailorder discount. They sourced the Main Dealer manuals for me and told me what I needed.

Regards

Chris

Re: Volvo Starting Problems

Update
First off sorry for late reply but have been at boat all week. Thanks to don and chris for the help,I tried all of what you said.Turns out my problem was me/choke?? when starting i turned ignition on, turned on blowers waited 3/4 minutes
then tried to start, result was choke had opened up therefore trying to start with no choke.Have now rewired blowers so dont need ignition on to run them,I now run blowers 3/4 minutes turn key and it now starts first time.
