VP 5.7 GM 280T. I am having probs with starting system. I believe the wires may have been crossed on ignition switch replacement. My friend did it and now it will srart intermittantly w/o jumping the starter. If you jump the starter it will crank so I know that it's hot. In the far lft position everythig is off but a few of the gauges are still active. In the next position, nothing but different gauges are hot now, nothing happens when turning the key to the start position. I looked in clymer and the wiring diagrams are non specific for the starter, they just show a block of wires going to starter. Does anyone know where I could find a wiring diag that would show the wires from the switch to the starter including color codes? Is there another way to test this?

You should have 3 wires to the ignition switch. Usually a 10ga. red wire goes to the B (battery) terminal, purple goes to I (ignition) terminal and yellow with a red strip goes to the S (start) terminal. On some of the earlier engine models white was used instead of the Yellow wRed strip wire.
To be exact, we would need an engine number, the 280T is the model drive you have. Then engine number would be something like AQ225B or something on that line.

You can buy this... BOOK ...personally, I went to the library and read it, copying the diagram for my boat. SELOC manuals contain some diagrams. Your best bet is still the factory manual. If your gonna work on it yourself, you need to have it.

Pardon my ignorance, but where would I find the engine number? I will look at it tonight. I finally was able to rebuild UV joints and have that back together. Tonight I tackle replacing the intermediate shaft bearings (posted questions seperatly.) Will keep posting. Thanks.

Usually the engine number is on the valve cover, or flame arrester. You may even find a tag above the starter.
For the newer Volvo engine (94 and newer) I would also suggest you get the Volvo manuals, but for the older engines the Seloc manual #3600 is just as good. I wouldn't want to use it for rebuilding a drive mind you, but for general engine and drive information it's actually better than the Volvo manual.
