Volvo shift shaft pin question

Drove small retainer pin into housing to release larger pin. In reassembly, how to you get small pin out or where it needs to be. Volvo 290 dpc

I made a tool out of an old shift cable end. left about 2" of the cable on the inner cable threaded end. On a grinder I ground the end of the cable to a sharp point tapered up to the cable size. The taper was gradual over 1/2" or so. Then you could stick it into the end of that small roll pin and pull it out.
Short of that, just leave the old one where it is and install a new one. Volvo says the hole will hold up to 3 of those pins.
