i have a volvo penta 250A/sp

the boat is in my driveway and ran fine last summer untill it stalled 2 minutes from dock. it ran fine in my driveway all winter. noticed a little oil and alot of air coming from my venting line (cv?) that goes from case to carb air intake.
compression check 1) 125psi 2)90 3)60 4) 150

i put a litle oil in #3 and it checked in at 60psi after oiled

it is an older glassply boat and in ok shape. should I fix it with my mechanic friend( what would this cost) or sell it and get another used boat.
I d guess I could get about 3000$ Can for it now if it still runs ok

I would pull the head and see what the head gasket looks like. My guess is that the head gasket is shot between cylinders 2 and 3.

Good luck

If you try to sell it, better hope the buyer isn't smart enough to do a compression check!!!!

That has a closed cooling system i believe. I think if it were a head gasket you'd know as you'd most likely have another sign, antifreeze in oil, loosing antifreeze out the exhaust, etc. with those kind of compression numbers in a running motor, I'd guess you need a valve job. Pull the head and get it checked by a machine shop. With the head off you can examine the cylinder walls for damage.

Don't try to dump it on some "sucker".

I don't know where you are located but in most states if you sell it "as is" and tell the new buyer the engine is tired there is no problem. However if you represent it as anything other than what it is, you could be be taken to court and made to pay what ever amounts the new owener spends to put it back in shape as well as his "time and trouble". (You can bet he won't take the cheap route.) All the buyer needs to do is ask you if there are any known mechanical problems, at that point you are on the hook if you don't disclose it. FYI: I have never bought a boat without asking that question. Do NOT trade one problem for a bigger one!

If you like the boat, repair/replace the engine. If you don't want the hassle, sell it as is and be honest and tell the buyers its a project boat.

Also, now if the buyer searches your name on the internet, doug carr will come up here on this forum and the buyer will be able to see that your knew you had a ring problem. This would not be good for you... Pull it fix the rings and sell it ... Or tell them what the deal is. Now you know and the public ( atleast those with an inter net connection) knows you know....

Do a cylinder leakdown test and see where the problem really is.

Re: volvo rings bad........ what to do????

thanks for the tips guys,
I wasn't planing on screwing anyone on the boat and hidding the problems.
I have a 2002 mint yamaha kicker, decent trialer, 280 leg in good shape new radio , fish finder and safety epuipment ECT....
what should I ask for the boat? and i would have it morred and let them drive it as well before they bought it. is 3000$ canadian to much to ask in prime boat selling season?

I will probly sell it as I dont want to put to much $ into her, and i would enjoy fixing up anthor used boat boat as well.

thanks
DOUG
