great forum!!
ive got a volvo 151a/290 and the head on the motor is about junk and before i spend $$ on a new one i thought i would explore my options. i have a freshley rebuilt 7.3 turbo diesel out of a ford truck left over from another project, i know this is a long shot and would require some modifications- regearing the od and creating a cooling system, the big question here is can i make it bolt up to the od??
the other option is to get a chev 350, and i know that would be relatively straight forward but i think the diesel would be cooler. thanks -russ

Re: volvo repower options

I have done some custom repowers in my shop but I would have to see pictures of the engine, transom assy and outdrive to give an honest answer. My only question is the 7.3 have aluminum parts on it? and the cooling system wouldn't be to hard to modify. I have a manual for a cummins 7.3L marine diesel V-8 (at least I think its for a V-8). I'll check when I get to my shop in the morning and post another reply.

Not enough outdrive for a 7.3 diesel.

Re: volvo repower options

the 7.3 is an all cast iron motor, im not sure if they were ever sold under the cummins name or not the real manufacturer was international/navstar. my fav. boat store here has a cummins 5.9 12 valve on the floor sold under the name iveco??
as for the od how much power can the 290 take? i know the 7.3 is overkill, as the motor sits now its about 275hp/550tq but could easily be detuned to about 185/335.
