Have just become aware of the volvo units with the fwd. facing props. I am no engineer but have to wonder, whats the point? , is it worth it? Form usually follows function but sometimes things can be overengineered as the british have a habit of doing. ie MGs, triumps, rolls RB-211, deltic diesels, sleeve valve radials.
Appears that the props can not be retracted so why not just a straight inboard? What am I missing here? Anyone have experience with these units? Must be aimed at the high $ market which I am not a part of. thanks fred

Re: VOLVO puller props ?

I assume you are talking about the Volvo IPS drives. They are ONLY used in twin installations and 36 feet is the MINIMUM length of the boat and they are found normally in the 40 to 50 ft. range.
The boat has to have a hull designed or rebuilt to certain specs to be able to use them. I've talked to a couple of guys that have actually operated them and the control is fantastic. They are faster than straight inboard, and a lot quieter.
Here's a link to more info them. And if you have to ask how much, you can't afford it.

http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/global/en-gb/marineengines/Volvo_Penta_IPS/

Also checkout the joystick link.

Cool. Looks like there would be no cavitation or slip with this design.

Hull design would have to be special to keep debris out of the direct path of the props.

"Hull design would have to be special to keep debris out of the direct path of the props."

Not really, there for a purpose. Clean water, as airplanes with front props-clean air.
From what I have read, these things are made to clean butt knocked off if ya hit something. Then you just go buy a new one. These are for big boats and people with big money
