Re: volvo pinta engine

Not a particularly difficult job with a manual. Drain the oil, loosen the belows clamps, remove shift cables if they are in the way, remove the bolts holding the upper unit to the lower unit, tap the upper unit with a rubber mallet until it is loose, lift the upper unit up and pull out. Watch that you DO NOT bend the shim plate(s). I think there is also some o rings - replace them. When you have the upper unit off you might as replace the exhaust belows. Make sure the replacement exhaust bellows has the backwash valve in it. Reassembly is the reverse. Please get a manual as it will have the torque specs etc. It is important that shim plates not be bent as the seal between the upper and lower units is metal to metal, although I have used anerobic Permatex as a sealant as well. I am no expert but I believe the shim plates are to ensure the gears mesh properly and are not a gasket.

Re: volvo pinta engine

The first thing one needs to know is what the year and model number of your engine and drive are.
IF it's a Chevy 4 cylinder with SX drive, all the info vicman gave you is worthless.

Vicman, just an FYI. The shims are not for gear mesh, they are for preload of the big bearing that sits on them.
The orings do the sealing and a sealer is ONLY used for corrosion protection, and not for sealing. Also, depending on the drive, the exhaust bellows may or may not have the shutters incorporated.

Re: volvo pinta engine

Your right Don. I understood from his post that he had a volvo engine 4 cylinder engine and assumed (bad thing) that he had a 280 style leg.
Thanks for the info on the reason for the shim plates. Always interested in learning new things.
