volvo penta with a vibration problem

I have a 4.3l GL volvo penta with 60hrs. It has recently developed a strong vibration when it is in neutral. Once it is engaged in drive the vibrations level out. Currently there are no other problems with it. I took the boat to a mechanic and he quickly diagnosed the problem as the coupler. Does this problem sound like it can be caused by a bad coupler? How do you diagnose a bad coupler? All the mechanic did was start the engine, watch it vibrate for about 1 minute and then tell me that it was the coupler. Is this a common problem with pentas? Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks!

I would at least pull the drive and check the alignment. If it is a worn coupler, you may see some metal dust around the edge where the input shaft goes into.

How old is this boat? Warranty issue?

The boat is a 05 Glastron GX 185. However I boat it used in 06. It only had 15hrs on it when I bought it. Does the factory warrent transfer with owners?
