volvo penta with 270-engine slow with no pickup

rode about 13 miles engine was running fine. all of a sudden it slowed down and i had to make it in barely above throttle. when i gave it gas it would pick up a little but start smoking from the caps where you put oil into the engine. there was oil on the dip stick, oil didn't apper low. any suggestions on what to check and where to look.

it has been sitting for a year, so the impeller will cause it to act in this manner. another question i changed my propeller and got a new carb, my rmps went from 3200 to right at 3900 my manual calls for 4000-4400 any suggestions. when checking the impeller what do you look for to see if its bad.

Did you have an overheat condition? If not, I don't see what the impeller would have to do with it. What engine do you have? The 270 is an outdrive, not the engine. Since you said caps (oil caps) I would guess a V8?

With smoke coming out of the caps, I would say it could be steam or oil smoke.
Did you notice any milky oil inside the oil caps?

I would start by removing and READING the spark plugs, oil fouled, water fouled, very clean (like brand new) etc.

A compression test would also be in order.

i just replaced the spark plugs today, and there was no milky oil. the engine is a v-8. when i replaced the spark plugs some were very black and dry others were clean and wet. any suggestions

Clean and wet with what? Water, Gas, Oil? ? ? ?

Wet with gas means it's running rich. Too much fuel, or too little air. Check your flame arrestor, is it plugged up?

The hub is in the prop (part of the prop) the hub is the part that has the splines that goes on the prop shaft coming out of the drive, there is a rubber hub that connects the splines to the prop. If it breaks you get high rpms and no speed because the inside (hub) is spinning and the prop is stopped by the water.
A prop shop can replace the hub, or you can buy a new prop, or both and have a spare.

the flame arrestor where is it located, is it the black part of the carburator that a wire from the engine plugs into. checked hub and prop seems to be ok.

tell me this, when i had my out drive off i noticed that the shaft coming from the engine where my outdrive yolk slides onto has a little give if standing behind the boat you can push the rod in about a inch or so and pull it back the same distance. is this normal.

NO it is not.
Most often it means very bad things are about to happen.
