My 2000 vp (5.7L) waterpump (mounted on front of engine) was dripping from the bottom, so I got the impeller kit and installed it with a new o-ring. When I started it it still dripped and continued to drip after I shut it off. I looked underneath with a mirror and the water is dripping from what appears to be a small (1/4") weep hole at the bottom of the housing. Anyone familiar with this?

Replace the pump the shaft seal and probably the bushing are bad.

so which pump is leaking? there are 2 there. Sounds like you replaced the guts of the real "water pump". But there is another pump above that one. Its often called a water pump but its correct name is a "circulating pump".

Re: Volvo penta water pump

If he replaced the impeller in it, I would guess he is talking about the raw water pump.

Re: Volvo penta water pump

thats what i thought to. But is there a weep hole on the VP pumps? I've only done like 5 vp's in my life and never noticed one. so i'm wonderin if he's talking about the weep hole on the circulating pump.

Its the raw water pump. I removed the outer housing and impeller however I cant get the rest of the housing off the pulley (where the shaft sticks through). anyone have any hints.

Like I said before, get a new pump assembly.
The pump doesn't come off of the pulley, the new pump includes the pulley.

...by the picture it is held onto the harmonic balancer with a couple of bolts. Remove the bolts and the pulley should come off. You may have to rotate the engine to get to all of the bolts. Bad design in my opinion...

I got it off. There were 3 allen head screws holding the pump to the harmonic balancer. Got a new seal for $3.00. -Beats $300 for a new pump.

I always thought it was an incredibly simple and great design. Beats the belt driven one on my 96 Volvo.

True. The best design is what the cobra has, 3 screws for a plastic cover and a couple for the pump. You can actually change it in the water.

You can change Volvo pumps and impellers while the boat is in the water. Plus you don't have to get wet doing it. Which is especially nice if you park in a marina with 15' of cold ocean water under your boat.

No, you have to get that pulley/pump assembly off the vibration dampner first. There are 3 allan head bolts that thread into the puller hole of the vibration dampner.
An OEM service manual would have shown pictures and explained HOW TO remove the pump. Guess he works on the principal that a boat is a toy, therefore manual is not needed.
The pulley is part of the pump, not part of the engine/vibration dampner.

Must be! Sent an email to a very good friend in AK, and told them to stop it. We'll see, but I have my doubts. Looks like 2-6 tonight. Funny, look out the window now and it's 46 and sunny
