Had engine rebuilt last year. Ran it for about 4 hours and winterized it. about two weeks ago I started up the engine in the garage and let it run for about 3 minutes. A milky substance came out of the two breather hoses in the crankcase. Now it appears that water is in the oil. Any suggestions?

I know Volvo sold some outboards, but I don't think this is one of them.

Moving to I/O

I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, but did you actually check for water in the oil pan? Sometimes condensation can build up under the valve covers, mix with the oil in the top end, and will look like a dirty milkshake coming out of the breathers. The condensation is caused by humidity in the air and not bringing the engine up to operating temperature (said you ran it for only three minutes).

Do you have water in any of the cylinders? Don't know what type of exhaust you have (FWC or RWC), but if it's raw-water cooled you could have a blown exhaust manifold gasket or corroded riser.

Do a compression check on each cylinder. If you have more than 20 percent difference between cylinders, you could have a blown head gasket.

The worst case scenario would be a cracked block from improperly winterizing.

Let us know what you find out, and welcome to iboats.

It may pay to check your sea water pump. If the weep hole in the pump body has got blocked the water may pass under pressuer beyond the inner oil seal and get into the oil pan.
Has the oil level in the pan increased? if so then get it drained immediately and refill with fresh oil before it starts to do harm to the internals.
Remove the seawater pump and check that weep hole. Check the seal installation also in case they have been installed the wrong way.

Get your engine running again and up to temp and then redrain the oil and refill with fresh oil. Usually a couple of oil changes will see things OK.

Peter

my mercruiser for some reason builds about 1 quart water in the pan every winter.usually takes 2 changes and then engine heat dries things out.if ur getting water thru the cooling system it usually starts pumping milky slop out the breathers and all over everything.
