Just bought a donor 79 boat that has a Volvo Penta 280 outdrive. I am a complete virgin when dealing with VP.
So I will have many ?s. So to start things off.
1 I do not see any trim cylinders on it. The guy told me they hooked up a battery and it goes up and down. How is this possible? It can lifted and lower by hand.

2 There is what looks like an exhaust right above the prop, But the engine exhaust goes straight out the transom on either side of the outdrive into some kind of box on the outside of the transom. Is this normal? Or is it supossed to go through the outdrive?

3 The prop turns to the left(viewed from aft) Does the engine turn left? I thought engine turned right? Or is this acheived through more intricate gearing than a mercruiser?

Well this is a start.:D

You need to post some pictures of the engine se we can see what hooks to what. It's possible that someone put a thru transom exhaust on it. It's not OEM if that is what you are wondering.

Volvo 280 like that does not have trim. It does have an electro mechanical lift motor assembly inside the boat.

Here is a link to download the OEM service manual for the 280 drive.
http://www.4shared.com/account/file/48536730/fa3b3311/280_to_DP-C_Drive_manual.html
The tilt mechanism is explained (kind of) in the manual.
The drive is also capable of running left or right hand props with just a minor linkage change on the back of the drive. It's also covered in the manual.

You've got thru hull exhaust, hope you have all the parts. The stock exhaust Y pipe is not there, you have it, or its gone. Salt or fresh water boat?

No power trim, just an electrical lift system. Sounds like it works.

I've owned a couple old Volvo Pentas. They're solid old drives.

What are doing with it? swapping to another boat?

Well I am going to use the chevy v8 in my 24 footer, but it has Merc setup. So I have to decide. My transom needs to be replaced and i have to add motor mount stringers for the V8. I currently have merc 165 L6 in there. Looks like there are some rubber exhaust hoses that connect from manifolds on donor and just go to the transom on either side of the outdrive.
Basically I need opinions on weather or not to change form merc to VP 280.

It's not going to be easy, but it's a do-able project. Since you are going to put in a new transom, then cutting a new hole will have to be done with a template to get the X dimention (Centerline of the crankshaft) in the right location. I have a .pdf file of the cutout and how it works if you want to look at it, but you will need to get one from a Volvo deqler in order to mark it on your new transom.
You are also going to need an exhuat Y for your transom shield so you can have thru the drive exhaust (MUCH quieter) From the looks of the pictures, it's hard to say what condition the transom shield, steering bushings, and drive are in before trying to put it in the other boat.
You may find it will be cheaper to stay with the Merc and see if you can find a Y pipe to fit your transom shield.
Until you get that flywheel cover out of the doner boat and see what configuration the exhaust is, you really don't have much to go on right now.
