Volvo Penta Trim / Tilt Problem

I have a 1993 24' Chaparral with a 5.7l engine and a Volvo Penta Duo-prop outdrive (DP-C or DP-C1 not sure?). I have been having trouble with the tilt/trim. The unit goes down fine but will not go back up unless I jump power directly to the hydraulic motor. I have replaced all 4 of the relays (2 at the transom and 2 under the dash). There is an analog control unit (little black box) under the dash. Could this be causing the problem ? Is it common for this part to go bad ? I have seen other posting talking about an in-line fuse. Do I have one ? Where is it ?

Yes the black box will cause the problem, along with a bad switch, bad wiring harness or connection someplace. Yes there are inline fuses, but they work for both up and down equally. If down works, then so will up (if it was a bad fuse)

Don S,<br />The black box has a red light on. Does this indicate anything ? Any suggestions as to where to start checking.

The red light indicates the drive is all the way up, that is why you can't get it to go up any more. Could be the rack or the gear or potentiometer in the steering helmut is broken, missing, or inop, allowing it to indicate the drive is up. Do you have a trim gauge? Is it working?

Re: Volvo Penta Trim / Tilt Problem

The red light stays on until the drive is all the way down. When the drive touches my driveway the light goes off. I have an analog trim gauge that has a needle which indicates up and down. It seems to be a little sensitive. When I jump out the hydraulic pump motor to raise the drive, the needle seems to go to the up position before the drive is completely up. With the skeg just 2 inches off the ground, the needle indicates full up position and the red light comes back on. I have tried to raise the drive from the down postion with the red light off and it still does not go up.
