I need to install a trim sensor on my Volvo SX I/O, just bought a boat and the sensor is missing. I can see where the wires pass through the transom but it doesn't look like there's enough room to get my hand in there to pass the new wires through the hole. Anyone done this?

Re: Volvo Penta Trim Sensor

I repaired my SX trim sensor when one of the wires broke off of the unit. In this case, I cut the wires close to the unit and added new wire to the unit so that I could reconnect the sending unit without having to run the wires thru the transom. Is it possible to pass the wire thru the transon from the inside of the boat and then connect the sending unit as I did?

Unfortunately the old wires were snipped right at the bulkhead. The new sensor comes with the wires molded into a grommet which seals the transom. The grommet with the wires has to be installed from outside. But thanks for responding.

I just did what the previous poster did and spliced the wires(DonS gave me some grief over this method). On my boat it is the inside connection and clip that holds the grommet that would be the biggest problem. As far as getting the wires through the hole, to me the drive would at least have to be off to complete the repair.

Maybe you should wait and do this at your next annual drive maintenance when the drive is coming off anyway.

To me, the trim indication is not worth having anyway and I am not going to replace the sender the next time it fails.
