I've read lots of trim threads, but here is what's happening with me. I have a 1994 Regal with a 7.4 Volvo Penta Duo-prop. Engine is a 7.4 GLPMDM, Ser# 4110103296. Trim switch runs down fine, and will go up using the trailer up and trim up switches together. Relays at the pump are good, switched both, same issue. Relays under dash good, switched both, same issue. BUT, the Faria trim gage says full up at all times. I disconnected the button switch on the dash and checked continuity on all phases of the switch, all checked good. My question is that the trim module or the "black box" (Part number 857534) under the dash next to the trim gage has the red light on at all times with the key switch on. Tried to adjust gage using the "Blue Stem" knob. I can get the trim gage to move from past full up to just a hair down to up. Doesn't seem to be any adjustment. The directions from the trim module says to turn blue stem till "red Light" goes on. It's already on before any adjustments. Any suggestions ?

Sounds to me that your problem is the Trim Sender. I had a similar problem when the insulation cracked on the wires to the sender and allowed water into the sender unit.

Absolutely correct, trim sender bad. I did wind up changing the gauge as it was very jumpy. Installed new gauge, same problem, but gauge didn't jump around anymore. So, I knew it had to be the sender. But what surprised me was that I actually unplugged the trim sender and the sytem worked perfectly, but of course with no indication on gage. With the price of a new sender of almost $200.00, and having to trim more of the hull transom to even remove the sender, my customer decided to just forget the sender and do it by feel. Who needs a trim gauge anyway. Thanks for the help !!:joyous:

You sure you have the potentiometer (trim sender) set properly?

The potentiometer is the original one that came in the boat. It's a 1994 boat that was bought new by the customer. I have checked the indexing, but the wheel is so old, I can't see the mark on the wheel. The Clymer manual says you have to loosen the steering arm to remove the unit, but I removed the one bolt that holds the fork over the top of the unit and it just slides right up till it hits the top of the "Routered out" transom from the boat manufacturer. So I'm gonna trim a little more to get the clearance I need to pull the unit straight up and out. I will set the trim rams at 1.65" extensions as per the hull 12 degree transom. I'm gonna just plug in the new potentiometer and turn slightly back and forth and watch the gage, but I feel sure that is the problem. I'm doing all of this while the boat is on a lift in the dock, which makes it more diffulcult. So since the customer says the drive has never been removed from the boat and the gage has just recently stopped working, I'm going to just have to assume it is indexed correctly. With the unit removed and the rams set, I will use a flashlight and mirror to see if I can see the slot on top of the rotary shaft and see if it looks close to the aligned sender unit marks when set straight down on top of it. Will let you know the outcome. Thanks for responding. I'm a Mercrusier Guy, Volvo way to complicated. LOL

The Clymer manual says you have to loosen the steering arm to remove the unit,

Clymers strikes again with it's wrong information. Why do people buy that waste of paper

There is a small Y shaped bracket holding the potentiometer in with a single 1/4" bolt.

Many times the gear on the helmet or the rack is broken or damaged causing the problem. Do you have the drive model number handy? There isn't anything listed with the engine as to what drive you have, nor the wiring.

The Engine serial # is 4110103296, it's a 7.4 GLPMDM, I didn't think to get the drive serial # when I was there last time, but according to the wiring diagram in "Clymer", the model on the drive shows to be a DP-C1/D1. The wiring diagram is spot on with what I have. I also was able to raise the boat on the lift, and we layed a 6x12x16 board across the dock and I did a thorough inspection of the gear on top of the helmet. It seems to show no cracks or missing teeth. It seems fine. The rack is secure and seems to be in good shape as well. Thanks for your help, I just could not see why "Clymer said to remove the steering arm. I removed the 1/4" bolt and it just almost came straight up and out. But I will have to trim away a little transom to get the clearance for removal. As soon as the new potentiometer comes in this week, I will be heading back to the lake to install and adjust it. One thing "Clymer" says during adjustment is to maintain 33 lbs of downward force during the adjustment steps, is that really necessary? Thanks again !!

Just wondering if you ever got this fixed? I have a Regal 1993 252 same issue. could you please share what was the problem if you fixed it. trim is driving me crazy.
