Have a 2004 Four Winns with Volvo outdrive. This past summer my trim gauge started moving erratically and then pegged in the up position. It now does not work. Any ideas on what could cause this and solutions?

The trim sender is either busted or broken. . . or could just be loose. Take a look at the outdrive where the trim sender is located to investigate further.

Which VP outdrive do you have?

5.0 Duo prop.

Given the age of the boat, I wouldn't be shocked if the gauge went kaput. I know my Tach was wonky in my '05 when I offloaded it. I think they were Faria and they do offer a repair service if you'd like to go that route should the gauge be faulty.

First I would check the connections between the sender and the gauge to make sure they are clean and solid. Typically there is a connection at the back of the engine where the sender wires connect to the boat wiring, and the connection at the back of the gauge. If those are good I would disconnect the sender wiring in the engine bay and monitor the resistance of the sender while you raise and lower the drive. If the reading is erratic, it's the sender. If the reading is smooth and tracks well with the drive position, it could be the gauge. You should be able to Google the expected resistance range of the sender.
