Hello All,

I recently came into the whole ?boating scene? so please bear with me, as the story is a bit long. I have a 1998 Reinell 203 equipped with a Volvo Penta Sterndrive 5.0 GL PBYC (Serno 4110168956; was able to look it up on the Volvo Penta web site Publication search - Publication Search : Volvo Penta).

Long story short, I originally took the boat in to a local shop to have the trim looked at. When I was talking to him about the details on the trim wiring issue I was concerned with, the mechanic mentioned that the Flapper Valve had fallen out and ?wallowed out? the Y Pipe in the process, after showing me on the engine itself and in an exploded view of the exhaust system, I gathered what he was talking about, and what parts etc. Essentially, not having this valve is dangerous because quickly decelerating or killing the engine can cause dieseling and flood/hydrolock the engine. It is also worth mentioning that the ?Flapper Valve Pin? had actually vibrated out through the side of the Y pipe where the exhaust bellows and hose clamps connect; so it?s likely the flapper is gone or just hanging out in the bottom of that exhaust pipe?so that?s got to get taken care of one way or the other? Then he told me it would cost around $1700 (not including what I already agreed to pay for the trim fix) for them to fix this flapper valve and the Y Pipe?which seems a bit excessive to me, so I set out to look it up myself and started digging around on the internet before I gave him the go ahead. After looking at the exploded parts breakdown of the exhaust system on some web site (Volvo Penta Exploded view / schematic Exhaust and Cooling 5.0GLPBYC, 5.0GIPBYCCE, 5.7GSPBYC, 5.7GSIPBYCCE, 5.7GSIPBYDCE - MarinePartsEurope.com) I find that the part he is talking about fixing (the flapper) is allegedly obsolete according to this Service Bulletin (http://www.marinemechanic.com/volvo/volvo/2010/25-2-5A[1]exhaustflapper.pdf), and shouldn?t even be fixed according to Volvo, not to mention they don?t manufacture the valve anymore. This of course peaks my curiosity (wondering if I?m about to get hosed), so I do some more digging and find quite a few threads talking about these flapper valve issues, but not with my engine model and no real consensus on whether or not they?re necessary; Volvo says no, some say yes, and others say?maybe not, but they aren?t clear on what to do about the flapper valve problem or the how/why (Volvo basically says the valve breaks too much and does more harm than good lol). To be clear, I believe the Flapper valve is item 24 in the above mentioned exploded parts breakdown of the exhaust; item 22 is the Y pipe, and the pin is item 23. Finally, the boat runs ok it seems, but I only had it out on the water twice last year before winter as I?d just gotten the boat in late September. There were a couple of start issues, I had to directly hook the trim motor to a battery (wiring issue now attributed to a blown circuit), and the engine bay seemed to have more water in it than it should after pulling out, but other than that it went well. Now, for the questions?

1) Are these flapper valves necessary if Volvo says they aren?t? And what are the possible repercussions of just putting on a new Y-pipe (or sealing the hole in the one that?s on now) without a Flapper Valve and in accordance with the above service bulletin. Could the current state of the flapper valve be why there seemed to be excessive water in the engine bay.

2) Being partial to my $1700 (less the 300 for the Y pipe), I am rather intent on fixing this myself?in addition the boat?s probably only worth $6000 to 8000$ so $1700 is a pretty good chunk of change in comparison...Given that, how exactly do I go about putting a new Y pipe on (and/or flapper valve if its needed)? The mechanic insisted that the entire engine would have to be lifted from the boat to do this, but looking at the exploded view, the picture of the engine on the Volvo web site, and the orientation of the engine itself within the boat, it seems like it could be done without taking it out?but like I said, I?m new to this.

3) If these flapper valves are no longer available and I need them, some web sites (Should my 270 Ex bellows have a flapper valve) mentioned using bellows with built in flappers, is this necessary And/or would installing bellows like those in the following link (Sierra Marine 18-2757 - Bellow Kit, 876633 @ MarineEngine.com), solve the back flow or dieseling issue if you also sealed the y pipe as indicated in the Volvo Service Bulletin. Again, if this method is appropriate how do I go about putting these bellows on and sealing the y pipe, and does the entire engine have to come out.

4) Can any of you tell if this shop I went to is just blowing smoke up my A@% or is this $1700 quote reasonable? I?ve tried calling other mechanics but no one will tell me without looking at the engine themselves, for which of course they?ll charge a $100 an hour just to tell me what I already told them was wrong with it, and then how much they?ll charge to fix it.

Any help at all is greatly appreciated, and whatever I end up doing with the problem I?ll be sure to come back and update so hopefully someone else can find this thread useful. Speaking of helping other people, the following three links are the closest threads I could find that discussed what I?m looking for, hopefully they can help point you in the right direction.

Thanks In Advance,

Beaumills

PS

As much detail as you can stand to write as far as the how to is concerned would be much appreciated, as I have little experience and will likely be working off of some Clymer Volvo Penta Sterndrive 1994-2000 workshop manual and pure intuition?the pictures I was looking at and the service bulletin are also attached as well as in the links.

Re: Volvo Penta Sterndrive (Inboard/Outboard) 5.0 GL PBYC Flapper Valve/Y Pipe Issue?

1) Are these flapper valves necessary if Volvo says they aren’t?

No, they are not necessary. Volvo has been running these engines without the flappers since 99 without engine failures.

2) Being partial to my $1700 (less the 300 for the Y pipe), I am rather intent on fixing this myself—i

If you look at the service bulletin, Volvo says to fill the holes with silicone. You could use something better like JB weld if it makes you feel better. Just put one hose clamp above the hole in the pipe and one below.

4) Can any of you tell if this shop I went to is just blowing smoke up my A@% or is this $1700 quote reasonable?

The drive comes off and the engine has to come out to replace the pipe. So the major part is labor, and labor depends on the access to get the engine out. Some engines have to be partially disassemble to get them out. Or stuck back under the deck. So without being able to see what the access is, it's impossible to say.

Holly Crap that was a fast response! Thank you. Ironically I'm in southwest Washington So were practically neighbors...

Just want to be clear, that dieseling thing shouldn't be a problem? I use the boat a lot to pull people on tubes and what not so i do a fair bit of sharp turns? Anyways, I get the boat back from the shop in 4 days with the trim fixed. So I think I'm going to just go with the JB Weld/Silicon solution. Ill just take the Y pipe off, fish the flapper out, seal it with some JB Weld, and put it the Y pipe back. Hopefully ill have that done within a week after starting the project, and the following weekend ill take it out for a test run. I'll be sure to come back and let you know how it goes, and whether or not I had to remove the engine etc. thanks again for the advice.

Re: Volvo Penta Sterndrive (Inboard/Outboard) 5.0 GL PBYC Flapper Valve/Y Pipe Issue?

My boat had done about 6 seasons, when, after pulling the outdrive I found a portion of the Flapper in the junction of the "Y" pipe. I checked the bulletin 25–2 5 01 and decided not to do anything about it. The bit was approx. 2 x 1 inch and semi circular and was extremely corroded to the point that it was flaky and was easy to break bits off it.
Now 7 seasons on I assume (fingers crossed) that the other bits have gone the same way and have been chewed up as they passed through the Duo Props!!

No, dieseling should not be an issue especially with turns. I believe the main problem is when you're at some speed higher than idle then abruptly throw it into neutral or kill the engine. You shouldn't be doing that anyways. Anytime you slow down, for a fallen tuber for example, you should be going to idle speed before going into neutral.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the reasoning is that you want to minimize the wake that hits the stern of the boat, and you want exhaust back pressure to keep any wake from coming back into the exhaust. In neutral or off, the water can possibly re-enter the exhaust. At idle speed, the exhaust pressure prevents that.

Dieseling is a problem, and can suck water into the cylinders. It would do that even if the flappers were still there.
Those flappers are not and were never meant to be water tight. They just slowed down LOTs of water rushing in, not faulty running.
Get your idle down and let the engine cool off for a minute or so before shutting off.
As long as the engine is running, in neutral or in gear the exhaust from the engine is going to keep water out. It's not necessary to shut the engine off while on plane for anything. If it's water sports, go to idle and neutral and idle for a bit, but don't let it diesel.

Re: Volvo Penta Sterndrive (Inboard/Outboard) 5.0 GL PBYC Flapper Valve/Y Pipe Issue?

Thanks for all the help guys, just got the boat back from the shop today (5 days late) and i should have time to start working on removing the flapper and sealing the y pipe on wednesday. It does not appear to me that the engine is going to have to be removed to get at the Y pipe. I decided I'm not even going to try to remove it, Im just going to take the the manifold off and fish the flapper out with a drain snake or something and i should be able to fill the pin holes with silicon from there.

Does anyone know that if i should bother taking off the flapper from both sides (only the right side failed). Just wondering if it would cause any problems leaving the other one on (besides the obvious possibility that it could fail and fall in the pipe as well). I'm going to try to make a video and post it so everyone can see what i did, hopefully I'll have it done by this weekend. Thanks again for all the help.

Re: Volvo Penta Sterndrive (Inboard/Outboard) 5.0 GL PBYC Flapper Valve/Y Pipe Issue?

Update...

So I finally had a full day off to work on the boat. For anyone who's interested I DID NOT have to take out the entire engine as the mechanic suggested to fix the flapper valves. I was able to remove both EDIT: exhaust elbow (Item #44 in the above exploded view diagram) and the connecting exhaust pipe (Item #2 in the above exploded parts diagram), and applicable bellows to fill the pin holes left by the flapper valve pins and inspect the Y-pipe. The left side of the Y-pipe actually still had the pin but no flapper. I found no flapper's in the Y-pipe, so I sealed the holes with masking tape and silicon and reattached the bellows and the manifolds and gaskets. Unfortunately, the ignition won't even engage now. Might as well be turning the key in a block of wood. sigh...

P.S

sorry, no video was taking way too long and making the process a little too difficult for my inexperienced hands.
