Hello All,
I recently came into the whole ?boating scene? so please bear with me, as the story is a bit long. I have a 1998 Reinell 203 equipped with a Volvo Penta Sterndrive 5.0 GL PBYC (Serno 4110168956; was able to look it up on the Volvo Penta web site Publication search - Publication Search : Volvo Penta).
Long story short, I originally took the boat in to a local shop to have the trim looked at. When I was talking to him about the details on the trim wiring issue I was concerned with, the mechanic mentioned that the Flapper Valve had fallen out and ?wallowed out? the Y Pipe in the process, after showing me on the engine itself and in an exploded view of the exhaust system, I gathered what he was talking about, and what parts etc. Essentially, not having this valve is dangerous because quickly decelerating or killing the engine can cause dieseling and flood/hydrolock the engine. It is also worth mentioning that the ?Flapper Valve Pin? had actually vibrated out through the side of the Y pipe where the exhaust bellows and hose clamps connect; so it?s likely the flapper is gone or just hanging out in the bottom of that exhaust pipe?so that?s got to get taken care of one way or the other? Then he told me it would cost around $1700 (not including what I already agreed to pay for the trim fix) for them to fix this flapper valve and the Y Pipe?which seems a bit excessive to me, so I set out to look it up myself and started digging around on the internet before I gave him the go ahead. After looking at the exploded parts breakdown of the exhaust system on some web site (Volvo Penta Exploded view / schematic Exhaust and Cooling 5.0GLPBYC, 5.0GIPBYCCE, 5.7GSPBYC, 5.7GSIPBYCCE, 5.7GSIPBYDCE - MarinePartsEurope.com) I find that the part he is talking about fixing (the flapper) is allegedly obsolete according to this Service Bulletin (http://www.marinemechanic.com/volvo/volvo/2010/25-2-5A[1]exhaustflapper.pdf), and shouldn?t even be fixed according to Volvo, not to mention they don?t manufacture the valve anymore. This of course peaks my curiosity (wondering if I?m about to get hosed), so I do some more digging and find quite a few threads talking about these flapper valve issues, but not with my engine model and no real consensus on whether or not they?re necessary; Volvo says no, some say yes, and others say?maybe not, but they aren?t clear on what to do about the flapper valve problem or the how/why (Volvo basically says the valve breaks too much and does more harm than good lol). To be clear, I believe the Flapper valve is item 24 in the above mentioned exploded parts breakdown of the exhaust; item 22 is the Y pipe, and the pin is item 23. Finally, the boat runs ok it seems, but I only had it out on the water twice last year before winter as I?d just gotten the boat in late September. There were a couple of start issues, I had to directly hook the trim motor to a battery (wiring issue now attributed to a blown circuit), and the engine bay seemed to have more water in it than it should after pulling out, but other than that it went well. Now, for the questions?
1) Are these flapper valves necessary if Volvo says they aren?t? And what are the possible repercussions of just putting on a new Y-pipe (or sealing the hole in the one that?s on now) without a Flapper Valve and in accordance with the above service bulletin. Could the current state of the flapper valve be why there seemed to be excessive water in the engine bay.
2) Being partial to my $1700 (less the 300 for the Y pipe), I am rather intent on fixing this myself?in addition the boat?s probably only worth $6000 to 8000$ so $1700 is a pretty good chunk of change in comparison...Given that, how exactly do I go about putting a new Y pipe on (and/or flapper valve if its needed)? The mechanic insisted that the entire engine would have to be lifted from the boat to do this, but looking at the exploded view, the picture of the engine on the Volvo web site, and the orientation of the engine itself within the boat, it seems like it could be done without taking it out?but like I said, I?m new to this.
3) If these flapper valves are no longer available and I need them, some web sites (Should my 270 Ex bellows have a flapper valve) mentioned using bellows with built in flappers, is this necessary And/or would installing bellows like those in the following link (Sierra Marine 18-2757 - Bellow Kit, 876633 @ MarineEngine.com), solve the back flow or dieseling issue if you also sealed the y pipe as indicated in the Volvo Service Bulletin. Again, if this method is appropriate how do I go about putting these bellows on and sealing the y pipe, and does the entire engine have to come out.
4) Can any of you tell if this shop I went to is just blowing smoke up my A@% or is this $1700 quote reasonable? I?ve tried calling other mechanics but no one will tell me without looking at the engine themselves, for which of course they?ll charge a $100 an hour just to tell me what I already told them was wrong with it, and then how much they?ll charge to fix it.
Any help at all is greatly appreciated, and whatever I end up doing with the problem I?ll be sure to come back and update so hopefully someone else can find this thread useful. Speaking of helping other people, the following three links are the closest threads I could find that discussed what I?m looking for, hopefully they can help point you in the right direction.
Thanks In Advance,

As much detail as you can stand to write as far as the how to is concerned would be much appreciated, as I have little experience and will likely be working off of some Clymer Volvo Penta Sterndrive 1994-2000 workshop manual and pure intuition?the pictures I was looking at and the service bulletin are also attached as well as in the links.
