last year I took my boat up to a lake and got some gunk inside and my thermostat got stuck. My Temp Gauge was not working and you know the rest. I have taken my boat and had the engine rebuilt. Winter came had it winterized and then summarized with new battery and took it out a couple of months ago for first time to break in engine. Boat ran fine. Only stop and started 5 times.

Took boat out the next weekend to put some more hours on it and started it about 5 times when the starter just starting whirring. No other noise.

Took back to mechanic and he said starter was bad and that wasnt covered. So he put a new starter in. $350 later I took it back out on water and after only 5 starts, it did the same thing. No clunking or grinding. Starter went straight from working to whirring sound. Mechanic said it must have been a bad starter. He replaced it and I took it out today and it works but timing is off. It back fires when I try to go to higher speed.

Any ideas? I dont think it was just because the starter was old or the new one was bad. When I went to pikk it up with the third starter he had his timing light on it. I feel like I have been not told the complete truth.

Re: Volvo Penta Starter

Welcome to Iboats.

Backfiring is often a sign of a timing issue.

You failed to tell us what year/model/anything about your engine and drive except that it is a volvo.
