Volvo Penta shaft seal

Relacing sea water pump impeller and impeller shaft seal. New seal has brass spring on inner circle edge. When i press the shaft seal onto the impeller shaft should brass spring be towards the front or back of the shaft? Thanks in advance

Come on now. Volvo has used hundreds of different pumps over the years.
What specific pump and engine do you have?

Volvo Penta engine in question is a 2002 5.0 GLA. the sealing ring is part # 827247. I have the repair manual but it does not show how seal is positioned on the shaft. I don't want to put it on backwards.

Got me, never tried to replace one of those. Usually when that seal goes bad, water gets in the bearing and it's shot. Then it's time to replace the whole pump.
Normally Volvo puts instruction in the package to show how to install seals.
