I found a June 2009 post really useful, and although the thread is closed, I thought the following info might be helpful to someone with this issue.
For a good graphic and replacement description see the above mentioned post... "Volvo Penta Sea Water Pump Seal ring Replacement "
Don's comment on the bearings possibly failing notwithstanding, I had this seal fail on a pump with less than 300 hours. (5.0 GXi-F) Being a good preventative kind of guy, I was on my 3rd impeller kit when the shaft seal leak showed up.
When I removed the pump (the 3 allen wrench bolts) I found the bearing feel to be OK. Apparently I caught the leak early enough that the sea water hadn't yet washed the bearing out and trashed it.
The seal itself must have had the rubber coating compromised on installation, since the (steel) cup of the seal was rusted through. The actual sealing portion was intact.
The trick was finding that seal for this engine... To make a long story shorter, the seal does NOT show up in the parts breakdowns for this model (larger inpeller on later engines). Volvo sells the whole pump at over $300, but the seal is the same part as that found in the breakdowns for a 5.0GXi-A.
The Volvo # is a 827247. A local dealer was able to cross that to a Sierra 18-2045. (common)
Both the original, and the Sierra seal are a GACO DRSM 16287 (which I couldn't find anywhere...)
With a bit of shaft and seal seat cleanup all looked good, and the pump runs fine, with no leakage. If this thread is left open, I'll update it if the bearing does fail at a future date, with engine hours.
I hope this saves someone a bit of part # research.
