First off I wanted to say you guys are great!!!!
I have 1979 Formula fishing boat with tilt trim and tabs, Volvo Penta 280 with a 5.7 chevy 350.
I pulled the motor because my starter bolt snapped and it was the only way to get the bolt out and replaced. While I was there I decided to rebuild the intermediate shaft ( Bearings, etc?) Anyway, I replaced the rubber rings (because they where cracked) and I am trying to install the clamping ring and noticed that there is a striker plates that needs to go on. Mine tore apart while pulling them off and I noticed they are paper thin aluminum. I am not even sure why they are there?.
Do I have to have them?
If so, is their any reason why I could not use a soda can and make the same thing?
Now I tried last season to put the clamping ring on without the striker plates and for the life of me with two buddies helping. I could not compress the new OEM rubber ring with the clamping ring to put the bolts in from the outdrive side. Is their a trick to do this?
Also, I have a good HEI distributor laying on the shelf and was trying find out if I could use it? (Yes, it came out of a car)
I know I pushing my luck but last but not least. I have a 1998 5.7 LS1 that came out of a Z28 Camaro Stick Shift with the full wiring harness and ecm sitting in the garage looking for a home. Is there anyway that thing could hook up to a outdrive? If so, what one.
Need a new project??
PS I notice in the Forums people are looking for parts for their 280?s here are the links I used to get my parts. Please, pass it on to anyone who needs help.
Thanks,
Ed
