I Have a Volvo penta 290 outdrive that is very stiff to engage reverse and oten does not lock causing the drive to rear out of the water. I have checked the cable for binding which seems O.K Any other ideas that I might try ?

Re: Volvo Penta Reverse Lock

If it is like a 270?
With the boat is out of the water make sure nothing is rubbing where the lock is. It probably just needs to be cleaned and lubed. Also make sure that your tilt motor is retracting all the way it should. If not it will keep the lock disengage shaft to far down and that will not allow it to lock.
If you cant get the boat out of the water you are kind of stuck until you can.

Re: Volvo Penta Reverse Lock

Check the other forum for volvo penta and search under outdrive lockdown for vp, there are lots of postings including some of mine on there.
It is hard to tell by eyeballing the parts if they are too worn or rounded on the edges to engage the bar that they are supposed to lock down on. I had to replace two springs plus the hooks that engage the bar to fix it.

Joe

Both selock and clymers manuals point out that those locking paws are a problem area. Volvo dealer should have them in stock, high traffic item. However bring the old ones with you. Easy to change. fred

By the way. If you do decide to buy a new lock be prepared for sticker shock. They are not cheap. If you have a boat junk yard around you, you may want to check there first.
