Volvo Penta ran with trim stuck up, change gear oil?

Hi, I'm new to this forum. We have a 2001 Reinell Runabout 190 (220HP) with Volvo Penta. I'm not yet sure on the exact model.

Last weekend, as we approached the dock to pull out, it started to get pretty windy.
As I approached the dock last weekend to pull the boat out, I pulled the trim up as usual and cut the motor, planning to tie off, grab the truck / trailer and walk our boat onto the trailer. Then it started really gusting perpendicular to the dock so much so I could not hold the boat. I told my girlfriend who has plenty of experience with the controls to take the boat to the other more protected dock 10 minutes away (at 5mph) while I moved the truck.

What I didn't know was that the trim was stuck in the up/beach position. By the time she realized it, I was gone, moving the truck. So she was stuck and a bit freaked out by the rough water. She piloted the boat at 5 - 10mph for probably 10 minutes in this manner to the other dock.

At home, I jiggled the trim pump wires and it seems to work fine, so I'm guessing a bit of connector cleaning and corrosion inhibitor should solve that dilemma.

My real question is whether I ought to inspect and change the gear oil? It was just changed before the trip. I've ordered a Clymer manual, but until it gets here, I'm definitely fumbling around.

----------

A 2nd question is regarding having been in a not too clean looking lake; no trash, just shallow. Is there a water intake filter I should check out and clean or replace?

Thanks!

With that manual, you will still be fumbling around. Your best bet is to get the model number and get the proper OEM manuals.

You should also NEVER run the engine with the drive ALL the way up.

Not sure why you think you need to change the gear lube, I would be more concerned about damage to the ujoints, gimbal bearing, bellows etc. You really need to pull the outdrive and look.

I would add checking the engine (impeller, headgasket, etc) to the list as I dont think you were getting any cooling water in the engine either

That should not have been a problem. Trimmed up, the water intake will be well into the water.

Well she made it to the docks right, your drive must have been low enough that it still picked up cooling water to not overheat the engine, at a no wake pace I wouldn't think the u-joint was in too much jepeordy, drive oil wouldn't be affected, I wouldn't worry too much but next time be more tenative at first tool around a little watch temps if all is good then get it on plane I think you'll be fine.

I would pull the drive regardless to inspect everything. It is possible that the bellows could get hit by the u-joints and put a hole in it. Since pulling the drive is relatively simple, I would just do it and have peace of mind.

Good idea. While I locate decent manuals, is there a online diagram or set of decent instructions for pulling the drive? I have lots of tools and I'm pretty handy with cars, but I don't know boats yet. I could always go to a shop, but I tend to fear they will 'find' something regardless. Either way, the more informed I am the better.

Supposedly an ear piercing sound alarms if temperatures rise too high. That wasn't experienced.

Make sure you buy a set of factory Volvo manuals. Pulling the drive is not hard but it would be useful to have a helper as the drive is heavy.

Basically, you

1) Pull the rear cover off and disconnect the shift cable.
2) Remove the nuts holding on the tilt rams. Often, you only need to remove the rear nuts and the shaft that goes between the two rams.
3) Remove the 6 nuts that hold the drive on.
4) Pull the drive off.

I also suggest buying an alignment bar to check the gimbal engine alignment before you put the drive back on. I always replace the 2 o-rings on the drive shaft as well as the ring that seals the water intake. Grease the shaft with coupler grease before reinstalling the drive.

Doesn't look too bad. In case I go the shop route, any guess on a ballpark price for the "inspection" part?

Thanks.
