Volvo Penta questions

Just bought a boat with a 5.7 chev and 275 outdrive. Maybe someone could answer some questions for me.

The Motor is not stock and could very well be out of an old pickup for all I know. Is there a way to tell the difference between marine and auto? Last week it overheated badly and warped the heads. I had the heads redone but cannot figure out the overheating problem. first thought it was a circulation problem, but seems to pump water okay. The day it overheated it was not running well and I believe it was a clogged fuel filter. Could running lean because of a clogged filter cause it to overheat? The previous owner also put an edelbrock manifold and a quadrajet carb on the boat. Could this lead to more problems? I had the boat out today and it ran better now with the new fuel filter but I'm afraid to go for an extended ride thinking it may overheat blow the motor again.

One other thing is the impeller pump wobbles a lot on the end of the crankshaft, is this normal.

Any advise for a nervous novice?

I have seen that quite often when people didn't know how to install it properly.
If that is bad, what else is wrong.
Sorry to say, but without seeing your engine, how it's plumbed, or anything else, you could have any number of problems causing your overheat.
It could be plain as day for a trained eye. Suppose you could post some pictures (big enough to see but not so big you have to scroll back and forth and up and down to see it) of your engine and the manifolds and cooling hoses?

Re: Volvo Penta questions

I'm trying to post some pics, we'll see if they come out. I'm concerned with the wobbling impeller housing. I split the riser and manifold searching for blockage. the two holes, front and rear were covered by the gasket. Is this normal? I've read in some threads that the 275 didn't have power steering but mines got it. Whats more probable, adding power steering or swaping out the old 285 for a used 275 or did some 275's come with PS.
Could someone please answer this: Could bad timing or lean mixture (clogged fuel filter) to a quadra jet cause my motor to overheat?

See anything on my photos that look suspicious?

I'm waiting to get my alternator back so I can get back to work on the boat, summers almost over

Re: Volvo Penta questions

If that's a clear plastic filter leading up to the carb, you need to get rid of that.

If you don't know the age of the impeller, you should just change it.
