Volvo Penta Question

Hey everybody, new to the site and to boating all together. Kind of funny but I'm trying to find out a little about my boat. I just purchased a 1998 Regal 7.0 with a 5.7 Volvo penta with dual props (very clean boat) that is about as much as I know about it! LOL! I took it out once, being inexperienced and no trim gauge, I guess I had the trim up a little too much and overheated the boat to the point of it shutting off (I was not looking at the temp gauge, stupid of me and being some what of a mechanic I know better and believe this is a bad thing) this comes to my first question does this motor have a safety shut off? It cooled down and fired up so we cruised for a while and as I rolled into the throttle slowly I could see the temp go down (150-125? deg) but it would back fire (me thinking it was the carb loading up) if I were to hammer it down it would be fine (no back fire) a boat mech said sounds like I burnt a valve any thoughts? Well the next weekend I was going to change the spark plugs and had 2 of them break off in the heads so I pulled the heads and figured might as well get them machined but the other questions I have are. What do these letters GXi or GSi or whatever they are mean? How would I find out what motor I have? Are there any special tricks to putting this thing back together or is it as simple as a car?
Thanks and sorry for such a long story

Re: Volvo Penta Question

Welcome to Iboats.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I've never heard of a boat overheating from being trimmed up too high, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.

The Letters GXI, etc. are different versions of, in your case, the 5.7 ltr 350. The letters stand for different things.

If you post your entire model number or serial number We can help you narrow it down.

In regards to the engine, I would just have the heads gone through and reassemble the motor like any other. You need marine head gaskets.

Let us know how it goes.

BTW, I would go through the cooling system, at least change the impeller, before testing the boat out again.

Re: Volvo Penta Question

Thanks guys, I will get the SN ASAP. Well some more bad luck. I found out from the head shop that the heads were bad; I guess there is a hole in the exhaust port that goes through to the intake port (not good at all!). So maybe me breaking the spark plugs and having to take the heads off is a blessing in disguise???? I will get that SN and keep you posted on whatever else that may go wrong. :(
Thanks again
