Volvo Penta problem

I have a 3.0 SX and have been slowing down alot lately. The PCV valve keeps blowing off and the pressure seems to be blowing out of the oil cap. The air filter has also filled with oil from the crankcase. I am hoping it is not a ring problem. It is a 2002 motor and has always ran on synthetic oil. Anyone have any ideas what to look at first? I will be doing a copmression test this week. Thanks in advance.

The compression test if the first thing you should do. It will most likely tell you where the problem is.
Here are the proper procedures for the compression chck. (It says Merc, but is word for word of the Volvo bulletin that came out)

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Bullet/97/97_25.pdf

Could an obstruction in the exhaust tube i.e. broken/damaged exhaust flapper, be the problem?

May be worth checking.

Volvo stopped using the flappers on the 99 models, so his 2002 model wouldn't have had them installed. Here is the service bulletin.

Exhaust Flapper Service Bulletin

Never even heard of an exhaust flapper. I will be running a compression test this afternoon but according to the procedure, it seems I may have bad rings. Hoping it's not.

Just a comment...(not an inboard fellow)

Wow, I had no idea you could have 70% difference between cylinders in an inboard. 10% is the name of the game with outboards. Worst case senario is 15%.

Good luck crazyed
