Volvo Penta overheating

I just purchased a 1970 Chrysler charger 151 with a Volvo Penta AQ120/200 engine. The temp gauge starts to go into the red whenever the RPMs get to 2000 or above. I ran it without the thermostat installed and still had the same problem. I checked the impeller and it seems to be in good shape, although one fin is slightly bent. What are the chances that I just have a bad temp gauge?

Re: Volvo Penta overheating

charger, you are probably pulling air in with your lake water thats cooling the engine...there are several gaskets on the volvo outdrive that leak when they get old...work ok until you try to put the boat on plane... get a peice of clear hose on the intake line to your water pump...if you see bubbles when its overheating you found yer problem...

ODDD1,

Thanks for the reply. I think I may have found another answer to my problem. Today I took apart the oil cooler. I found a mud dobber's nest inside. As soon as I get some new seals I'll put it back together and see if that does it. If not, I'll try looking for bubbles.

Thanks.

Replace the impeller anyway. It may "look" OK, but it ain't. As they get older, the vanes can't flex properly anymore. And this affects cooling.

Page 62,

Thanks for the help. I went ahead and ordered a new impeller and thermostat just to be safe. Hopefully this will take care of my problems.

Thanks
