Volvo Penta overheat, picking up where I left off...

I've have an ongoing overheating issue with my motor.

See this thread from last year.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=271237

I'm thinking of trying to reseal my lower drive to the intermediate in an effort to stop air from entering my cooling system.

I have been researching a bit, looks like there are two seals I would need to replace if I split the drive.

My questions are:

1. Can I remove the lower unit without removing the rest of the drive?
2. Am I going to need special tools or is any shimming for the reinstall?

Can anyone give me some pointers or tips on the process?

Thanks.

Did you use a new gasket with your new hose connection on the drive? What was the condition of the hose itself? Was it clean inside the hose so it could seal proplerly on the new connector. Was the gasket surface clean and smooth? any corrosion on the H bracket that would prevent the new hose connection from sealing. How about the oring between the lower unit and the intermediate. If it's leaking air when on plane, well ...........................

You never answered the above questions from back in August. Probably would have helped.

To answer your questions, yes you can pull just the lower and replace the 3orings. 2 of them are for oil passages, the most forward one is for the water passage. Just follow the procedures in the OEM manual.

And trust me, your problem is only like Ostsideend in the fact that it overheats at higher rpm, but not similar in the cause. He has an Alpha I Gen II with a raw water pump in the outdrive, and as you know, yours is engine mounted.

The part I got from the dealer was used. It seemed in good shape. I'm sure I cleaned al the surfaces and I did put in the new gasket. At the time I thought it helped the problem, some.
Thanks for your response.

I'm ready to try to reseal at the lower unit. I recall the previous owner saying there had been some work done to the lower unit. May not have sealed it correctly back then. Who knows.

I'm having a bit of trouble finding the three seals I need.

I see #44 on this page
http://www.volvopentastore.com/LOWER_GEAR_UNIT/dm/*******.993332291--**********.697040936--view_id.315545

and perhaps #24 on this page
http://www.volvopentastore.com/INTERMEDIATE_HOUSING_DRIVE_275/dm/*******.993332291--**********.697040936--view_id.315444

I'm not finding the third seal. What am I missing?

Also there is no mention of install/removal of the lower unit in the 270 or 280 oem manuals. They only talk about rebuilding it once removed. I hope this is because its a no brainer. Unbolt and drop the lower.
It does mention locktite on the bolt threads going back together so thats good to know, as well as torque specs.

I'm going to collect the parts and do the work next weekend.

Thanks for any advise.

DO NOT Use loctite. Use some gasket sealer to prevent corrosion. Have never seen one come loose yet.
I will get the PN's for you in a minute. Volvo does make it hard to find them.

Re: Volvo Penta overheat, picking up where I left off...

I finally received my orings and will be installing them this weekend. I have one last question however.

Below is the part number for the 3 orings, and where they are located.

attachment.php

This diagram, which I did find finally in the 280-dp manual, refers to VP sealent # 1141570-0 Polymeric sealant to be applied to "contact surfaces"

Can anyone tell me if there is an alternative to the volvo product and what are the contact surfaces?

Trying to do this right the first time.

Thanks.

Re: Volvo Penta overheat, picking up where I left off...

Just thought I'd update my thread. I finally dropped the lower unit and swaped out the three o-rings.

Pretty straight forward. the lower came off with no persuation.

It did appear that there was no sealer as Don mentioned on the mating surfaces. The bare aluminum showed white spots from oxidation.

I didn't see any other signs of trouble. Hopefully It will help my problem.

Anyway I put on a thin layer, bolted it back together and refilled the outdrive.

Have to wait a couple weeks for the lake trial.

Thanks Don S., again for your help and insight.
