I have a 1992 Volvo Penta out drive, and I believe it to be a 290, but not sure. If it is a 290, how do you tell. Also how do you tell if it is an A,B, or C? I have the serial # but don't know how to tell from that. The motor is 431-A DP. Its on a 24ft. Play-Craft. I am wanting to check the u-joints and change the bellows. I sent this in earlier today, but it never posted. If it shows up twice I apologize. Thanks for any help.

Re: Volvo Penta Outdrive

There is a 290 and there is a 290 A and B if that's what you're referring to.
The A is where the integral bearing box/clamping collar began. The pre-A 290's use the steel bearing box and separate aluminum clamping collar.
The 290 also uses the mid size driven gear bearings. C and later uses the larger diameter bearings.
The vertical shaft diameter also changes with the C and later.

A 290 style drive will be using the SS cylinder anchorage bracket. After this series, the cylinders make a direct connection to the suspension fork as with the C drives. But these are not in the 290 category meaning that some C and later parts will not work on the 290, and visa versa.
