I have a 1999 Caravelle boat with a 5.7L GXI Engine. The outdrive is hard to turn under load. Any idea's on what could be wrong? or How to troubleshoot? Please help!:)

Along with Bondo's suggestions and questions. Make sure the steering cable coming from the helm isn't tied down. It has to move back and forth while steering. I had one where the guy stacked downrigger balls between the cable and the boat to keep them from rolling around. Really bound up things.

Re: Volvo Penta Outdrive Problem- Please help!

Thanks for the replies so far. The outdrive has not really been serviced per say, but i did change the gear oil at the end of last season. I checked the power steering fluid and it seems to be okay. I have not greased. There is a zirk(sp?) fitting on the side of the outdrive that i have never greased, would this make a difference. I will check the steering cable to make sure it is not bound, but i have not stored anything on top of it. I am not sure where the reservoir is? Any suggesstions?

Get in there and grease the zerks (any and all involved in the steering), then do a little cranking back and forth --repeat.
