Volvo-penta outdrive ID?

Hello, I recently bought an older boat to fix up, and it has a volvo-penta outdrive on it that the previous owner tried to "fix". In the process, he has lost some parts, including the shift mechanism cover that has the model number on it. He has no idea as to the model, but was able to tell me that it was originally an inline 4 cylinder that the owner before him replaced with a ford 302. I looked in the clymer's manual, and the engine is a volvo-penta unit, and the outdrive appears to be a 270, although it could also be a 200 or 280. As I am new to I/O's, I need to know how to distinguish the models by the internal parts, and if there is interchangability between models. I did a search on this site, and the only thing I found that was close didn't answer my questions. Thank you for any help, as I would rather get this combo running than either buying a whole new outdrive or re-doing the transom for an outboard.

If the little brass tag is still on the side of the engine it will probably tell you the engine and outdrive models. Otherwise the Selocs manual should help you identify the unit<br /><br />Regards<br />Peter

what year is it. Look up above the drive on the transom ring there should be a tag with the serial and model number. It may be hard to read.
