Hi All Just going to Detroit WED. to check out a Trophy . The guy keeps it Moor'ed thru the summer and keeps it stored in the winter and has never run it in the driveway .... Can I "Muff this outdrive ?" I need to at least hear the engine run. There;s quite a few hours on it and I' owned mostly 2 strokes. I want to be surre it;ll run a few seasons.
Any other suggestions as to what to look for in this model Motor or I/o's in general when Buying would be greatly appreciated !
It's a 4 cylinder Volvo 250 motor and I believe a 290 outdrive ? 4cylinder. 120 HP ?

Here's a pic:

Yes...you can. Besides the muffs, you need a rubber stopper to plug a hole in the front of the drive.

What year/model is the motor?

The drive is a great drive assuming it has been cared for. Has it been used in salt water? If so, keep in mind that manifolds for this engine will set you back $700.

Thanks FOr the reply... Here's some info Off the AD:
1985 Bayliner Trophy 21 foot. Clean fishing boat. Hard top model. Two covers. Volvo Penta 4 cylinder salt water version. Volvo Penta 290 out drive.

The Boat has been in Freshwater only. Where am I supposed to put the rubber stopper and whats it's purpose ? It looks like there are holes towards the front of the outdrive is that where the water goes in and the muffs should be ? Most outdrives I've seen are have the holes right in the middle of the outdrive but these are at the leading edge of the drive.
Whats the best way to check the Manifolds ? Do yyou think I should do a compression test on the Cylinders ? Of if it idles good do you think they could be allright ?
Thanks ! Appreciate all the help !

PS In the pic do you think the fiberglass will clean up pretty good ? Or maybe scrub the outdrive ? And use some specific paint ?

There is a hole below the bullet on the leading edge of the drive. At least it is there on the 270 drive.

If it has been used solely in fresh water, your manifolds should be ok.

I have no idea about cleaning either the fiberglass or the sterndrive.

Re: Volvo Penta Outdrive How To Muff ??

Just wanted to let yall know I got the boat and it;s a beauty !
One last question. the Exhaust "bellow" (I'm guessing thats what it;s called...) it's the round rubber tube that has the exhaust gasses in it. Well it has a small little home in the bottom of it and I can see water leak thru a little bit when the engine was running on Muffs, I know it will need replaced. I was wondering what it might hurt runing it once at the lake and what one might cost for a replacement on a 290 VP outdrive ? Thanks ! I wanted to to a sea trial tommorow but not sure what that little hole will do ?
Joe.

If it's the lower bellows you are looking at, that hole is a drain hole to let the water out when the boat is out of the water. It's normal.

Ok so that round rubber acordian tube comming from the transom to the outdrive should have a hole in it ? it seems to me that the water would leak into the motor that way ? Thanks for the reply !

EDIT: I just looked in the manual and it doesn't say anythig about a hole in the exhaust bellows. IE: positioning it so it faces down to drain. Wondering if this shouldn;t have a hole in it ?

As Don said, it is normal for there to be a small hole in the exhaust bellows and the bellows should be installed so the hole is on the bottom. I wondered the same thing when I replaced my bellows.

I'm not sure exactly how water does not enter it when the boat is in the water, but perhaps because the bellows is compressed when the outdrive is in the down position, that keeps the hole closed? In any case, the water can only go as high as the waterline. But perhpas Don or someone else with more knowledge can shed better light on this.

You hit the nail on the head am dew. water will not intrude you motor through the bellows. Your exhaust exits the engine and turns upward, making a u-turn well above the waterline, then down and out through the bellows. It will hurt absolutely nothing for the lower half of your exhaust to be full of water, which is a good thing, because even without a hole in the bellows, it will still be full of water when at rest.

Water DOES get in the exhaust bellows. It's designed to.
The exhaust bellows hooks to the exhaust tube on the inside of the transom shield which connects to the exhaust outlet on the exhaust manifold. On the other end it hooks to the drive with a big opening at the back for the exhaust to get out. The bellows is just there to guide the exhaust out the back and not in front of the drive where it cause prop ventalation due to the air bubbles.

Only the ujoint bellows remains dry ........... hopefully.

Cool thanks all ! I made the guy take 50 bucks off the price due to the hole d:) . He obviously didn;t know much about it either. he had the boat professionally maintained.

Thanks again !
Joe.
