volvo penta out drive noise

i have a duo prop that when trim is down it sounds great . but when it is trimed up in beach mode it makes a clatter from the starboard side upper cover of the out drive. i just bought the boat two weeks ago and have not put it in water yet. i think it maybe a u-joint and dont have a book yet, but i ordered a book. clymers. i would like to try this thing but am afraid to . is this common noise or should i do some investigation in to this noise. P.S. the depth finder is broken and am looking for a new or used one to replase it but cant find one . its a impulse teck. qt-204 it fits my 1990 carver 2557 dash pod. i would buy a different one but the transduser is mounted through the hull and i dont want to replace it if i dont have to.

NEVER, NEVER, EVER, run an outdrive in the full up position.
The only choice you have now is pull the upper gear box and looking for damage.
