Hi guys well an hour ago I started getting the boat ready to take out and I pulled up the dipstick and checked oil in the engine to find its basically bone dry or has about 1mm of oil on the tip of the stick?, I checked under the oil cap on tappet cover and there is oil up there, the boat went perfect last week and I cant see any signs of oil leaks and especially not all the oil out of the sump whats going on??? im having a heartattack ere as this is the second time I was taking out boat and the engine and leg has just been completely rebuilt.

That has nothing to do with your oil level. The oil should be checked "With the dipstick" each and every time prior to leaving a dock or anchorage.

What engine and drive do you have?

Re: Volvo Penta Oil

sorry for delay, its a Volvo Penta AQ130 mated to the 270T Outdrive. I realise having oil in the tappet cover has nothing to do with the oil level but it atleast tells me there is a little oil in there.

How critical is it to have it on level ground as the boat is on a trailer and ive tried tilting it down at the front and it read a litle bit more oil but still a fair bit under minimum. When I look at the engine it looks to be level when i tilt the front of the boat down.

Hey Charger! (Get it, "hey charger").

To check the oil level it is critical that the motor is level otherwise whatever the dipstick reads is inaccurate. Put it on a level surface, wait 5 minutes and then dip - top up as needed.

There is only two ways for oil to disappear, either it gets past the rings and/or valve stems and burns away or it leaks out externally.

Aldo

Have the engine sitting roughly level, and fill it to the full mark on the dipstick. (most engines sit level or slightly bow up when in the water.)

Re: Volvo Penta Oil

Might have a look at drive oil level also.
Have you checked the oil levels since service/rebuild?
If you did there might be cause for alarm. If you didnt, top off engine oil, check drive oil, and if no obvious problems go for a boat ride and keep a close eye on fluid levels and look for any signs of exhaust smoke. Possibly was not filled properly???

It is very common for a new engine to use a bit of oil at first, the builder of the engine should have told you to keep an eye on the oil level durring break in.

how many hours on the engine now?

Re: Volvo Penta Oil

bout 20 hours on it now, oil gets changed as soon as it starts to discolour from gold.
