Hi everyone, I just got a 1984 Bayliner Capri with the Volvo Penta inboard (120 hp) engine. For some reason I'm not getting any fuel to the carb. It ran fine when I got the boat last week, but now I can't get it to start. What should I do?

Re: Volvo Penta - no fuel to carb

What is the procedure you are using to start the engine?
If it's turn the key to crank the engine till it starts, it ain't gonna work my friend.
Are you familiar with starting engines without EFI? On most marine engines with carbs you have to pump the throttle once to set the choke, then cranke the engine with about half throttle. Well those 4 cylinder Volvo's don't even have chokes. So you have to crank the engine and pump the throttle at the same time to get gas to the carb (cranking runs the fuel pump) and pumping the throttle adds the extra gas to the engine via the accelerator pump.
You could also have something plugged up, in the fuel system, or a bad pump.
Have you checked the filter?
If the boat is on the trailer, is it sitting bow down with little gas in the tank? That is a sure way to run out of gas in the carb.

I did pump the throttle several times to try and get it to fire. I need to check the filter and make sure it's full of gas. Thanks!

I have a 1995 Volvo 3.0 motor, I also have the same problem motor will not start at times no matter how much I pump the carb. What I do is pour a little gas down the carb turn the key and the motor takes right off.

Re: Volvo Penta - no fuel to carb

You both may have problems with the accelerator pump. If, when you are pumping the throttle no gas is squirting into the throttle bores, then either the carb doesn't have any gas in it or the accelerator pump or circuit is bad/plugged.
Notax may also have a choke problem, but Cierra, you don't have a choke on yours. Both are completely different kinds of engines one Volvo, one GM, so what works on one may not work on the other.
Cierra, will yours start if you add fuel to the carb and try to start?

Problem solved...no gas in the tank = no gas in the carb. :)

The previous owner told me the fuel gage didn't work, but I found out that it does work when you put gas in the tank!

Thanks for the help.

Just something to keep in mind. Newer I/Os use electric fuel pumps, some with FI use more than one. Anyway, at least one pump will be wired to an oil pressure switch and won't pump until there is some oil pressure
